Obituary for
William Maxim
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Maxim on May 9, 2019 at the age of 88. William was an only child born on January 3, 1931 to Efrem and Millie Maxim. His family owned a store and farm in Bellis, AB where they made a living until fire claimed the store and they were forced to move. The Maxims settled in Smoky Lake, where William’s father bought and maintained a flour mill until it too succumbed to fire in 1945. William’s family then moved to Hinton, AB where they managed a hotel. They stayed there until they relocated to Edmonton in 1954. His parents bought a rooming house to support themselves. They were active in the AUUC and took William to many events there.
He lost his dad in the Fall of 1987. When his mother’s health necessitated a move, he and his mother moved to Belvedere Seniors’ Lodge. She died the following year. William was devastated. He remained at the lodge until he was transferred to Rosslyn Place 5 years later. For many years William’s many talents went unnoticed. He had a physical disability and was underestimated. So it was at Rosslyn Place that William began to blossom. He talked more, and even learned to read! He enjoyed reading the bible, singing hymns and going to Saturday night dances. He was encouraged to speak his mind. People joked and laughed with him. He had many friends. He stayed there for 22 years until he needed more care.
William spent the last 3 ½ years at Griesbach Retirement Residence. He continued to flourish there. He really liked all the help he got and made friends with anyone who took the time to understand him. William got to experience things in his later life that he didn’t when he was younger – having birthday parties and celebrating Christmas. He was included in family suppers and was happy. He was always very positive and a pleasure to be with. He was most appreciative for all the help he got. We are sorry to see William go, but are blessed to have had him as parts of our lives.
Funeral Service Thursday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton. A visitation will take place from noon to 1:00 p.m. that day. In lieu of flowers, donations in William’s name can be made to the Canadian Red Cross.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de William
