Ron Laughren of Strathcona County passed away peacefully on May26,2019 after a battle with Parkinson Disease. He is remembered with love by his wife of 55 years, Kathy (Kathleen Ball). He is survived by his son Ken (Kara), daughter Gayle Stannard (Kent), and grandchildren, Mack, Katie, Keelan, Teigan, Mason and Chad and his twin brother Don (Pauline), sister Pat Macdonald, brother in law Hugh Bevan and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Gary, sister Shirley Bevan and brother-in-law Gordon MacDonald.
Ron was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan and grew up in Stranraer, Saskatchewan. He and Kathy married in 1963. Soon after, they moved a home onto the Ball Family on Wye Road, where they raised their three children. He lived there until his sudden death this past Sunday.
Ron came to Alberta in 1962 after 3 years with Canadian Pacific Railway as a telegraph operator. He worked in Edmonton at Stelco for 10 years before starting R&K Carpet Cleaners with Kathy in 1974. They owned and operated R&K for 27 years together. As a family great times were spent in the outdoors, camping, fishing, dirt biking ( at Cadomin yearly) and ball games. Winters were hockey. He coached the boys when there was still an outdoor rink at Wye school. There was snowmobiling right from the back yard, snowmobile races with NARA on Big Island Lake every Sunday, and curling at Ardrossan and then Strathcona Curling Club when it first opened. He was an avid sports fan and never missed an oiler or Eskimo game. After retiring in 2001, they stayed busy travelling in the motorhome and on motorcycles visiting friends and family. Ron always enjoyed visiting with people and the yard was usually full of cars and motorcycles with friends stopping in for a beer and a laugh around the fire pit. He made everyone feel so welcome.
There will be Celebration of life held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Park Place Funeral Home, Sherwood Park. A private family internment has been held at Glenwood Memorial Garden.
Donations can be made to Parkinson Association of Alberta.
