ROBERT “BOB” IRVEN THOMPSON
1936 – 2019
Our family chain was broken on May 11, 2019 when Bob passed away at the age of eight-two.
Bob is survived by: his loving wife of sixty years, Betty Anne Aldrich-Black; four children, Lori (Gord) LaBoucane, Rob (Johanne), Len (Tracy) all of Mayerthorpe, AB and Deb (Steve) Speer of Blue Ridge, AB; thirteen grandchildren who fondly called Bob “Grampy”; six great grandchildren; sister, Joyce (Art) Borle, Cranbrook, BC; uncle, Harry Shierman of Calgary; nieces, nephews and many cousins. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Irven and Marie Thompson of Keoma, AB and after retirement in Calgary.
Bob was born on November 14, 1936 in Astoria, Oregon to Irven and Marie (Shierman) Thompson. At the age of two Bob’s parents, moved back to the Thompson family farm in south-central Alberta.
Bob attended Bruce Lakes School near Keoma and Kathyrn High School, with secondary schooling at SAIT in Calgary. Bob was noted for being a hard worker, with three occupations, farmer, heavy-duty mechanic and trucker. He had boundless energy, a love for people, and a passion for living life to the fullest. Bob touched the lives of many as a: 4-H leader and judge; musician; mechanical shop supervisor; chuckwagon driver; snowmobile racer; antique car owner; and the list goes on.
Bob’s strength and bravery, throughout his life, was proven when cancer struck in 1995, followed in 2010 by the first of three strokes. His spirit never waivered; he amazed and inspired all.
Bob enjoyed traveling. He was happiest on family holidays around North America and when hosting events at his farm. In latter years he enjoyed showing his antique car around Alberta, and in Arizona where he wintered with his wife.
One year ago, Extendicare Mayerthorpe became his home. The family is indebted to the staff and nurses for making Bob’s transition a pleasant experience. Thank you to the Mayerthorpe Care Centre, University of Alberta Hospital (Stroke and Renal Programs), Misericordia Hospital, and many doctors and nurses for the compassionate care Bob received the past nine years.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on JUNE 15, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Mayerthorpe. A private inurnment will be attended by his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the Mayerthorpe Public Library, P.O. Box 810, Mayerthorpe, AB, T0E 1N0 or the charity of your choice.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Robert Irven Thompson November 14 1936 May 11 2019 (age 82)..
