A long-time resident of the Nelson area, Peter was born in Florence, South Carolina and moved to Oakland, California with his family where he was raised on Thornhill Drive in the Montclare district in the Oakland hills. The son of a decorated United States Air Force pilot, Peter attended Skyline High and was very proud of the fact that Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks both attended the same school in different years. An avid swimmer, Peter worked at the Montclare Swim Club in 1955, going on to become the manager. As a member of the Dolphin Swim Club, he loved swimming in San Francisco Bay (to Alcatraz and back) and also spent time in Oahu where he worked as a lifeguard. Peter came to Canada in 1967 as a draft resister and settled in Sproule Creek, a short distance from Nelson, BC where he remained the rest of his life. During his work years, Peter tree planted in locations throughout British Columbia and on Haida Gwaii before retirement.
Well-known and well loved, Peter will be missed by his only daughter, Katriona Auerbach of Prince George, BC; his friend, Ingeborg ‘Inky’ Leavell of Fruitvale, BC; his sister, Antoinette ‘Toni’ Connors of Alameda, California; his nephew Martin ‘Marty’ Donavon LaJoie of Santa Rosa, California; his cousin Sally Seaman Kunz of Lafayette, California and Ronny Seaman of Santa Rosa, California and many, many friends from California to British Columbia to Alaska. Peter was predeceased by his parents Peter King Snr and Alyce Rose (nee Donovan) Arpin and Michael Arpin of Oakland, California.
An announcement will be sent out for the details on Peter’s Celebration of Life, which will be held at his property in Sproule Creek in the near future.
