Herschel Stephen Norton
1922 – 2018
Herschel Stephen Norton, of Hilltop Road, husband of the late Marion North, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital after a brief illness on Monday, December 10, 2018 at the age of 96. Born in Sevogle, N.B. he was the son of the late Stephen and May (Waye) Norton.
Herschel retired from General Motors in St. Catharines, Ont. After 37 years of service.
He attended Wesley United Church in Trout Brook. He was a member of the Royal Canadian
Legion, Branch No. 40 in St. Catharines for 27 years and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 90 in Sunny Corner for 16 years. He was also a member of the Island View Seniors Group in Sunny Corner.
On June 18, 1941 at the age of 19, Herschel enlisted in the Army with the Royal Canadian Artillery, 7th Anti-Tank Regiment. He served in Africa, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Sicily and Scotland. From the date of enlistment until V. E. Day, he served on the front lines as a bombardier. He was the recipient of the bronze Oak Leaf.
Herschel is survived by: his brother, Doug (Joan) of Sunny Corner; his sister, Olive Peters of Marquette, Michigan; sister-in-law, Phyllis Norton of Trout Brook; several nieces and nephews.
Herschel was predeceased by: his parents; his wife; brothers Burton, Willis, Weldon, Ronald, Harvey, Robert, Leonard, Henry and Hubert; sisters Annie McCoombs-Sutherland and Alice Pretu: brother-in-law Richard North: and his beloved nephews, Steven and Paul Norton and niece Betty Ann Redmond.
Cremation has occurred. There will be no visitation. A memorial service celebrating Herschel’s life will be held at meadows Funeral Home Chapel, Sunny Corner, NB on Saturday May 18th at 2:00 PM with Rev. Geza Szemök and Father Dan Melanson officiating.
Please note: Members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #90 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:45 PM for a service.
A reception to follow at the Lion’s Club building in Sunny Corner after the funeral service.
