Hazel Carter
1938-2019
Hazel Carter, 80, of Canning, died at home on May 23. Born
and raised in Prospect, Hazel was a daughter of the late Della and
Merritt Strong.
Hazel had a wonderful sense of humour, a wide smile,
exuberant laugh, and an adventurous spirit. After completing high
school, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Woman.
Posted overseas in Metz, France, and in Ontario, she made friends that
lasted her lifetime. After her service, she worked in the former
Family Allowance office in Halifax. After returning to the Valley when
her children were born, she sold Avon for many years, and was actively
involved in the Canning Women’s Institute, Rebekah Lodge,
and the Royal Canadian Legion. She attended the Canning and Pereau
Baptist churches.
Hazel was a longtime resident of Blomidon. She and Vic could
grow almost anything, and planted large vegetable and flower gardens
each year. Visitors in the summer always left with a box of
strawberries or a bag of tomatoes and peppers. Hazel belonged to a
dart league in Canning for many years, and she and Vic had an ongoing
rivalry to see which of their teams would win. She was a talented
seamstress, and sewing was a constant source of happiness throughout
her life. She was always creating something. She had great empathy for
others, and tried to see the best in people. She bragged about her
children, and welcomed their friends. There was always enough room at
the table for more, a place to stay if you needed, and hugs. Her
favourite saying was « count your blessings », which she did,
every day.
Hazel is survived by her children: Lisa (James Streeter),
Mark (Margot Matsell), and Rosemary (Kevin Sullivan), and her
grandchildren: Joshua, Alexander, and Ivy. She is also survived by
sisters Effie Weir, Truro, and Sharol Pinch, Hamilton, Ontario; as
well as nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Hazel was predeceased by her husband,
Victor Carter; brothers Roy and Bickford Strong, and sister Melva
Burrell, Ohio.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by
request. The funeral service and reception will be held at 1:00 p.m.
on Saturday, June, 1, 2019 in the Cambridge Baptist Church, Cambridge,
Kings County. Burial will take place in the Cambridge Cemetery.
