With deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother on May 5, 2019 at the age of 95.
Christine will be lovingly remembered by her children, Carol and Gina (Bruce), and her grandchildren, whom she raised, Angela (Barry), Richard (Natalie), and Andrea; her brothers, Phillip (Marlene); Raymond (Alice) and Roger; along with 27 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, and 47 great-great grandchildren. She was also lovingly known as “Mom” by most of her nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Victor, her children Lloyd, Gordon, Joyce, Helen, Alphonse (Boss) and Rose; her parents, John and Caroline Ironstand; her sisters Charlotte, Jacqueline (Agnes), Lorna, Yvonne; and her brother Moses.
Christine was born in Roblin and attended Residential School in Labret, SK until she was 16. She married Victor McKay in 1941 and they had 8 children. They lived on the Tootinaowaziibeeng reserve for several years but also lived in Lynn Lake, Thompson and Winnipeg where they made lasting friendships. Christine was always busy making slippers (moccasins) and her favorite things were playing bingo, watching wrestling and baseball (her favorite team was the Toronto Blue Jays). She kept track of all of her family members by phone; she had a long list of phone numbers and would call often to check up on everyone. She was deeply religious and would let everyone know that she prayed for all of us every day.
Christine spent the last few years at the Kildonan Personal Care Home where she made a lot of friends and continued to make her slippers – she even made several pairs for the staff and they were sent as gifts as far as Russia, she was quite proud of that.
Christine was very sharp until the end, she had a fantastic sense of humour and shared a lot of stories from her past and said she had so much more to share. She leaves a deep hole in our hearts and will be truly missed by everyone, especially those lucky enough to have a close relationship with her.
Minister Warren Ironstand will lead the service and the celebrant will be Father Bastin.
A light lunch will be served following the internment. All services will be held at the Hall.
Pallbearers will be: Allan McKay, Bryan Burston, Jordan McKay, Albert Burston, Darryl McKay, Gordon McKay. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Barry McKay, Richard McKay, Phillip George Ironstand, Warren Ironstand, Gary McKay, Darren McKay and Nelson Giesbrecht
