Baba will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children Darlene, Gordon (Iris), Edward (Bev), and Elaine (Victor); grandchildren Kim (Ralph), Lorisa (Chad), Mike (Janna), Christy (Rich), Stephanie, Allison (Darren), Kristopher (Jess), and Heidi; as well as her 14 great-grandchildren (Bailey, Jarrett, Calla, Urijah, Eve, Hailey, Jocelyn, Brettley, Myers, Cooper, Bellamy, Madden, Theo, and Maelle). She is also survived by her beloved brother Harry and sister Kay (Peter), one sister-in-law, and many other extended family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Michael and Maria (Harkot) Pulak, husband Dmytro “Jim” Pylypjuk, brothers Billy and Steve Pulak, sisters Anne Orsulak and Julia Perun, one sister-in-law, four brothers-in-law, one son-in-law, and her stepfather.
Baba was born in Pansy, MB on August 5th, 1929. Growing up, she enjoyed working on the farm, playing sports, and attending Sarto School. At the age of 17, she moved to Winnipeg along with her sister and found work at the Nutty Club factory. However, she soon discovered that city life was not for her and so returned home to help on the farm. It was there she met her love, Jim. They were married at St. Michael’s Church in Sarto in 1950 and had many adventures living and working together, which spanned from Cochrane, AB to Hamilton, ON. After having children of their own, Baba longed to be nearer to family and so they returned to the Sarto area to start farming. She remained close to her family throughout her life.
Having been widowed for almost 33 years, her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. There was no greater happiness than seeing her face light up when she spoke of her family and the memories they shared. Baba was no stranger to hard work, frequently sharing stories from her time hoeing sugar beets, working at the sewing factory, and cooking at Phyllis’ Catering, Sarto Hall and the Church. She loved being busy, working outdoors, tending to her garden and berry patches, and cooking our favorite Ukrainian dishes at her wood stove. She found comfort in reading Bible stories and listening to her country music. Baba was generous beyond her means and her memory will live on in the many traditions she shared.
Thank you to the Southern Health Region home care team for providing support and companionship to Baba while she remained in her home on the farm, and to the staff at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre for their compassion in her final days.
