Laurence Albert Carman Cook
1966-2019
With heavy hearts the family of Laurence Albert Carman Cook
announces his death. Laurence died peacefully at home on April 24,
2019 following a brief but valiant battle with cancer.
Despite being born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (March 1, 1966)
Laurence was a proud Grand Mananer. Returning « home »
at the age of two, Laurence was raised on Grand Manan, and after
attending Dalhousie University, he returned and lived the remainder of
his life on the island.
Although his children Allyson, Hannah and Wesley Cook were
his true life’s work, he made his living as a fisherman.
Starting as a deck hand, he eventually built his own business,
Shadrack Fisheries.
Laurence was a dedicated fisherman. He loved the sea, the
camaraderie, and the industry. He turned his keen intellect to
advocating for the fishery. He spent countless hours volunteering for
the Grand Manan Fishermen’s Association, and served in many
leadership positions including on the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans Scientific Roundtable for Canada, and was the President of the
Lobster Council of Canada.
Besides his children: Allyson, Hannah, and Wesley (Allyssa
Frankland); Laurence is survived by his mother, Edith Cook, and father
Carman (Bonnie) Cook. He also leaves his girlfriend, Sharon Cossaboom,
her two sons, HR and Douglas; sister Melinda Cook (Doug LeBlanc), and
uncle Buddy (Aneta) Benson.
Sadly, he was predeceased by his sister Tanya Cook, and his
wife, Joan (Ingalls) Cook. The devotion and care he showed Joan as she
died of ALS was returned to him a few years later by Sharon.
Laurence’s family will forever be grateful for
Sharon’s dedication to him in his last months, and for the
joy she brought him in the years after Joan’s
death.
Laurence and his loved ones also want to express appreciation
for the excellent, compassionate care provided by the Extra Mural
Nurses of Grand Manan. Their efforts, along with Sharon’s
allowed Laurence to remain at home until his death.
Visitation will be held at Immanuel Family Church, 749 Route
776, Grand Manan, between 1:30 – 5:30 PM on Friday, April 26, 2019. A
funeral service will be held at the same location on Saturday, April
27 at 1:00 PM, with a private interment to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Society or the
Charlotte County Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s
choice. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Ells Funeral Home
Inc., 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB. Condolences, donations, and
messages of sympathy may be sent to www.ells.ca or (506)
