Jordan Kenneth William « Ken » Whiffen
1944-2019
On Friday, April 5, 2019, Jordan Kenneth William Whiffen
(Ken), loving husband, father, grandfather and
great grandfather passed peacefully away at the age of
74. Born on July 9, 1944 in Come by Chance, NL and raised in
Southern Harbour, Ken grew up during a difficult time in rural
Newfoundland. In the early 1960s he spent time out west
where his first son, Jordan, was born. He later lived in
Ontario where he met his wife of forty-one years, Doreen (nee
Penney). They returned to Newfoundland in 1979 and together
raised three sons, David, Ashleigh, and Leo, as well as a daughter,
Penny. In 2018 he and Doreen moved to Nova Scotia to be
closer to their children and grandchildren. Ken’s least
favourite passion of flying was always overcome by his love for his
grandchildren. As his family grew and moved away he made
frequent trips to visit his children and grandchildren, flying
throughout the Atlantic Provinces as well as to Canada’s
North. Along with his family, Ken’s true passion and love
was for woodworking. Although not formally trained in the
craft, he created masterful pieces of cabinetry, cases and family hope
chests which he gifted to loved ones. With his own
creativity, there was nothing he couldn’t create and
build. Ken also had a passion for writing poetry and short
stories. Many of these centred around his upbringing and
experiences in life as well as his love for nature, more in
particularly, trees and birds, both of which he admired immensely. He
was known for his love of music, especially Elvis, the Montreal
Canadians and his passion for political debate.
He is survived by his loving wife Doreen; sons, Jordan, David
(Debbie), Ashleigh, Leo (Lana); daughter Penny (Shawn); grandchildren,
Jordan, Mathew, Austin, Colton, Wilhelm, Eli, Christian, Hayley, Lia
and Lucca; great grandchildren, Layton and Maxwell; sisters, Dola,
Judy; brothers, Patrick (Bernadette), Andy and Eddy (Lynn);
close friends Patrick Lynch, Derrick Broaders and Rick Vaughn.
Ken was predeceased by his father, Leo; mother, Mary; sisters,
Marilyn, Vera and Margaret; brothers, Roderick (Roddy), and
David.
