Henry « Harry » Phelan
August 11, 1927 – April 11, 2019
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and exceptional man. He passed peacefully into the Kingdom of Heaven in the comfort of his own home on April 11, 2019 at the age of 91. Born August 11, 1927. He was the eldest son of the late Herbert and Mary Phelan of St. John’s. Predeceased by the lovie of his life Margaret (March 2017) they were marries 67 years. He will be forever loved as father, friend and mentor by his children Brenda (deceased 2014) Bill Malone, Maureen (Derrick March), Gerard (Sheila), Andre (Jenny) and Joyce (Wayne Gregory) with whom he resided. Precious grandchildren Andrew (Tracy) Malone, Shannon (Julie) Malone, Tara (Matthew) Moore, Coleen (Dion) Davis, Jamie March, Gerard (Chelsea) Phelan, Madison, Myranda (Tyler) and Dylan Gregory. Three great-grandchildren Jack, Alex and Kail. Also remembering him with love are his brothers Doug (Sylvia), Kevin (Sharon) and Sister Barbara of the Presentation Sisters. Margaret’s sisters Annie, Isabel and Irene. Also missing him are many nieces and nephews, his many friends from Holy Family Parish, Paradise and treasured friend Brother Ed Wakeham. Harry grew up in St. John’s and worked 43 years as a letter carrier with Canada Post. He retired in 1988 spending his retirement years doing his favourite things – reading, walking and watching old movies. He especially enjoyed visiting old friends (Joe Whelan) and had great memories of his younger days. He was a man of great faith and enjoyed being a Eucharistic minister for his parish. He treasured his friendship with Father Wayne Dohey who provided constant support when Dad was sick. A very sincere thank you to Dr. Jillian Clarke, Dr. Don Fitzpatrick, Dr. Jeff and Dianne White and to Gayle Colbourne-Abbott for their many years of caring for Dad. Special mention to Dr. Jamieson Mercer for going above and beyond. He loved you like his own. Finally, the family would like to thank Wayne and Joyce for caring for Dad so well!!! He was so lucky to have you to provide him with every need. And to Madison and Myranda for lending their Mom to Poppy and to Dylan for spending such a huge amount of time with him. He Loved you all so very much! Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Saturday and Sunday from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. Funeral Mass will take place at 9:30am on Monday, April 15, 2019 from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist with cremation to follow. Donations in Harry’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Angels Association at Niagara University, The War Amps or to the library of one’s choice in recognition of Dad’s love of literature.
