Barbara Jean McCallum, age 90, of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Spruce Lodge. Born in Kitchener, Ontario, daughter of the late Reginald and Sarah (Selman) Pearce. Survived by her true love and best friend of 63 years, Clarence McCallum and proud and loving mother to Rob (Julie), Richard, Jim (Monique) and Gordon (Nancy). Grandmother of Michael, Sarah, Amy, Ian, Katherine, Terry, Cameron, Claire and great-grandmother of Austin, Adelyn, Gavin and Tessa. Barbara was both academic and artistic. She earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English, and then completed her teaching certificate with additional specialization in art. While teaching English and Art at Listowel District Secondary School, she found reasons to pick up the mail regularly, capturing the heart of Clarence, the postmaster. Their marriage of nearly 63 years was full of family, travels across Canada and summers enjoying nature at Lorimer Lake. Barbara will be fondly remembered by her siblings; Dr. Richard H. Pearce and Betty Cooper, and her sisters-in-law Helen Ackert, Marie Jones, Shirley (Rowland) Kaufman and her many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her brother Alan (Ruth) Pearce and sister-in-law Joyce Pearce and brothers-in-law Fred Cooper, Lloyd Ackert and Bob Jones. The family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful staff at Spruce Lodge for all the care and compassion given to Barbara, it is very much appreciated. Family and friends may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday, April 26, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Avondale Cemetery.
