ANNIE BERGEN
Peacefully on April 2, 2019 after a short illness, Annie Bergen passed away at the age of 87 years.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Lebtag, nephew Peter Breul (Marta and Carey), niece Irene Breul (Neil Wiebe), niece Irmgard Contant (David and Nick), nephew Edwin Bergen (Norma), (Adam and Scott), nephew Ron Bergen (Debbie), (Blake and Justine).
Annie was predeceased by her father Peter, mother Anna, sister Katharina Breul, brother Jacob, brother-in-law Peter Breul, and two infant siblings, sister Lena and brother Peter. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Annie was born December 23, 1931 in Schoenhorst, Ukraine and came to Canada in 1949 with her mother, sister and brother, settling in Winnipeg. Annie began work as a sewing machine operator for a short time before entering the hair dressing field where she worked for the remainder of her working years. She was baptized on March 13, 1951. She was a member of First Mennonite Church for many years before transferring to Springfield Heights Mennonite Church.
Annie never married but she had five nephews and nieces whom she considered her children. Family was very important to Annie. Her life revolved around her mother with whom she lived and her siblings’ families. The Breuls and the Bergens were very close and Annie was always a part of their many activities. Her Donwood Avenue home became a hotel of sorts for out of town family visitors and a gathering place for many family occasions over the years. Her deteriorating vision made it difficult to remain in her house, be she was very happy to be surrounded by all the people of Kingsford Haus where she lived for the last four years. Annie loved being around people.
Annie loved to travel and enjoyed many trips both in North America and abroad with nieces, siblings, cousins and friends.
Thanks to the staff on 6E and 8A at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassionate care during her brief period of hospitalization.
Funeral service will be on Saturday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church, 570 Sharron Bay, with Reverend Jack Dyck and Reverend Rafael Duerksen officiating. Interment in Green Acres Cemetery. Viewing prior to the service.
Annie was resting in the assurance of her salvation, through her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
