Anne Martin of Grandview, MB passed away peacefully on Friday, April 26, 2019 at the age of 90 years.
Anne was born on February 11, 1929 in Zbochno, Poland. She was the youngest child of Leon and Paraskewa Yakobovich. In September of 1938, the family which included Baba Lachevich, immigrated to Canada, settling in the Rural Municipality of Grandview. Anne and her brother and sister were able to start school at the Blackstone School just three days after arriving. None of them could speak a word of English, so they had a lot to learn.
In 1950 Anne married Gordon Martin and they farmed a quarter section of land in the Locksley District. In the early years, they had to work off the farm, which took them as far away as Kitimat, British Columbia. They eventually purchased her father Leon’s quarter section of land.
Anne loved living on the farm where she was able to fulfill her love of gardening and raising a variety of animals on their mixed farm. Every year she would plant a huge garden and the summer would be full of canning and freezing all the produce.
In 1989 they moved into their new home in Grandview, and then fully retired from farming in around 1992. Gardening continued to be her passion even if the garden patch was a little smaller. Her garden included apple and crab-apple trees and a yard full of beautiful flowers.
Anne loved to celebrate all things family and friends. Family was very important along with friendships that lasted a lifetime. Every gathering included food in abundance whether it was coffee time or a big Christmas dinner. The more the merrier. Even when family and friends were a long distance away, she kept in touch regularly by phone, letting everyone know how much she cared. We will miss her beautiful smile, down-to-earth positivity and her unwavering selflessness.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Gordon, her daughter Judy (Patrick), her son Rick (Renee); Barb Komar; 6 grandchildren – Eric, Carrie (Lonny), Marianne, Shauna (Shawn), Aaron, Kyle; 4 great grandchildren – Lane, Sara, Ayden and Avalynne; her brother William sister-in-law Betty; and many nieces and nephews.
As per Anne’ wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place at a later date.
