Peacefully, in his 93rd year, Luciano left this life to be reunited with his wife Vittoria who predeceased him a short 4 months ago. He is survived by his children, Diana (Gerard) and Walter (Karyn), and by his grandchildren Michael (Ellen) and Robert Power.
A free spirit, Luciano refused to be fenced in by a desk job. In search of adventure, he left a coveted government position and, together with Vittoria, emigrated from Italy to Canada in 1956, arriving in the farming community of Elrose, Saskatchewan during the spring thaw, where their sponsors William and Hannah Crawford, ran a small hotel. A year later, after completing their work contract, they relocated to Toronto, but maintained a lifelong friendship with the Crawfords who gave them their start in Canada.
In Toronto, Luciano ran his own real estate and insurance business, but his real passion was the outdoors. He never missed the opportunity to go off the beaten path to discover a new fishing spot or hunting grounds. There were many trips to Algonquin Park, the French River and to camps in Moosonee with the aid of local guides he got to know. He returned frequently to Saskatchewan during hunting season, and together with the caravan of hunting friends and many dogs, travelled extensively across North Dakota, Montana and Argentina.
In his youth, Luciano was legendary for his knowledge of the mountains surrounding his home town of Collelongo, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. On what was to be his last trip back there in 2010 he lay down on the ground at the Prati S. Elia, he said, to soak up the smells of the mountain so he would never forget them. An excellent marksman, in 2006 at the age of 80, and with a borrowed gun, he won the skeet competition held during the town’s annual festa.
He lived a full and rich life on his own terms fiercely independent until the end.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at 1 p.m. at the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario.
