Obituary for
Lilian Joan Johnson (Hepworth)
Joan Johnson died peacefully at Montfort hospital, Friday the 15th of March at the age of 93. The last of her generation, she was born near Shoal Lake Manitoba, the third daughter of Joseph and Lillian Hepworth (nee Wherrett) and sister to Marjorie Douglas, Betty Feniak and Patricia Coleman. She left the farm and graduated with a MA in mathematics at a time when women in universities were much less common.
Married for almost seven decades to the late Joseph Johnson, she raised three sons, David (Margaret), Bruce (Valerie) and Michael (Diane). She was a proud grandmother to Alex (Sara), Aaron and Nicola.
She taught for many years at Algonquin College.
She will be most remembered for her work for the Anglican Church in a series of parishes. The term “pillar of the church” doesn’t quite do justice to her unceasing charitable and social efforts throughout her life in Yellowknife, Prince Albert, Edmonton, and finally Ottawa. She was a founding member of St. Michael and All Angels’ and Julian of Norwich parishes.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Julian of Norwich Anglican Church, 8 Rossland Ave. (at Merivale Road), Ottawa on Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 1 – 2p.m. Memorial Service in the Church Sanctuary at 2p.m. A Reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
Charitable donations may be made in her name to Julian of Norwich Anglican Church Memorial Fund or the Primate’s World Relief Fund.
