Joseph Ward Donahue
1939-2019
With sadness, the family of Ward Donahue announce his
peaceful passing on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Bobby’s Hospice
in Saint John. Ward was born in a small town outside of the
city of Miramichi called Newcastle, on October 22, 1939 to the late
Melvin and Frances (Casey) Donahue. Ward was predeceased by
his wife Marcia Gail (Dykeman), by their daughter Tanya and his
brother-in-law Angus. He is survived by his two sisters:
Mary Ann MacMillan and Sarah (Jack) Higgins, his two nephews: Andrew
MacMillan and Mark (Rachael) Higgins, his two great nephews: Alexander
Victoria and Matthew Higgins and great niece Olivia
Higgins.
Wards family moved to Glen Falls, Saint John when he was a
young boy where his father owned and operated a trucking company which
was probably the inspiration for Ward’s career. He
worked within his family business for a while before working at
Crosby’s Molasses in Saint John as a long haul truck driver,
delivering molasses throughout eastern Canada and USA from which he
retired after nearly 40 years.
Ward lived with his family until meeting and marrying his
wife Marcia of nearly 49 years. He and Marcia resided in
Quispamsis with their daughter and light of their lives,
Tanya. They enjoyed spending summers camping with family and
friends. Ward took great pride and care in all he did with his family,
friendships, home and property in Quispamsis. During his
retirement, Ward enjoyed bowling, attending church services (for which
he was always a half hour early), Sunday dinners with his sister,
monthly Saturday breakfasts at the local Lions Club and family visits,
sharing lots of laughter and stories of new and old. He was
a friend to all who met him and will be best remembered for his
strength of character, constant faith, resilience in life, his warmth
and generosity, along with wonderful sense of humour.
In keeping with Ward’s wishes, no public viewing or
funeral services will be observed and a private interment will be held
at a later date. Thank you to Brenan’s Paradise
Row Funeral Home in Saint John for arrangements and
services. The family wishes to extend many thanks and
gratitude to the nursing staff, doctors, kitchen staff, cleaning staff
and many volunteers, for the exceptional care extended to Ward during
his last few months of life. He spoke of you all with great
affection; the friendships made with all and loved being a part of
your home and special family. A special thank you to Joan
and Doug for your visits, Ward spoke of you both often and with
affection. Donations in Ward’s memory can be made
to the wonderfully caring facility of Bobby’s Hospice or the
Canadian Cancer Society.
