John Francis Cassidy
1938-2019
With heavy hearts, we announce the
passing of John Francis
Cassidy. He died peacefully, surrounded by
his loving family, on March 15 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care
Centre.
Born in The Gorbals District of Glasgow,
Scotland on May 11, 1938, he was the eldest son of John Sr. and
Margaret (Beckett) Cassidy of Glasgow, Scotland.
He is survived by Joy, his loving wife
since 1961; son Michael (Donna), Truro, NS; daughters Sharon,
Fredericton, NB and Lesley Belyea, Amherst, NS; as well as four
beloved grandchildren, Stephen Belyea, Halifax, NS, Ryanne Belyea,
Amherst, NS, Michelle Cassidy, Dartmouth, NS and Kayla Cassidy, Truro,
NS.
He was predeceased by his parents, his
brother James of London, England and son-in-law Bruce Belyea of
Amherst.
John and his family came to Canada in
1967 when he joined the staff of the Technical University of Nova
Scotia (now DalTech). In 1974 he became the first person to
hold the position of industrial engineering manager at Crossley
Carpets in Truro, and was promoted to Production Manager in
1979. After a 1982 heart attack, John resumed his career as
a manager, consultant and he also taught at Springhill Community
College from 1994 to 1996. He had been self employed since
1996. Following a stroke in 2003, John resumed his
consulting career until 2010.
John served two terms as President of
Truro YMCA and over the years held several other positions as a
volunteer. During the 1970’s he was a member of the Royal
Canadian Legion, Branch 13, in Truro. He was quietly proud
of being the third generation of his family to serve overseas in the
British Army. He was drafted in 1956 and went on active
service to the Middle East in 1957-58.
His abiding love of Celtic music was
very evident in the many years he performed with friends and a group
named Ceilidh at venues in the Maritimes. He also produced
and hosted Shamrocks and Heather for CKCL, CKTO, CKDH and the AVR
network.
John took great pride in watching
Stephen play hockey and Ryanne basketball as well as both of them
participating in track and field events. He was among their
biggest fans. It always warmed his heart to share special
occasions with them as well as Michelle and Kayla.
Arrangements are under the direction of
