James A. Chandler
1927-2019
CHANDLER JAMES – At Lincourt Manor on Friday, March 15th, 2019,
James Albert Chandler, loving husband for over 65 years of June
Marilyn (Poulton) Chandler of St. Stephen, NB. Born in Toronto,
Ontario, on April 21, 1927, he is the son of the late Albert &
Gretta (Craik) Chandler .
Jim started his career in sales in the building supply industry in
Toronto and Fort William, Ontario. He moved to St. Stephen in 1967 to
be General Manager with Flakeboard, then moved to Minto, NB, to manage
Eastland Industries. In 1973 he and June decided to become
entrepreneurs and returned to St. Stephen, opening Tower Jewellers,
later renamed Chandler Jewellers, in the Charlotte Mall in St.
Stephen. Jim loved the social aspect of the business and the
opportunity to interact with the community and share his many stories
and opinions. Jim loved the outdoor summer life and spent most summer
Sundays (after church) boating and swimming with the family. After his
retirement,he spent most mornings at Tim Horton’s, debating the state
of the world and trading jokes and opinions with his friends. He
continued to share his stories with all his visitors up until his
final few weeks.
Jim was part of the original group of people instrumental in getting
Lincourt Manor built. He chaired the fundraising committee and then
served on the board for many years; never expecting he would reside
there someday. Our family is so grateful that his efforts back then
made possible the excellent and compassionate care that he has
received there for the past 19 months. Jim was a longtime member of
Christ Church, St. Stephen, singing in the choir and actively involved
for over 45 years.
Surviving, in addition to his wife June, are his children Betty (Rick
Nolin) of Mississauga, ON, Thom (Sherree) of Fredericton, NB, and John
(Tracey) of Edmonton, AB, and grandson Jack. Jim was predeceased by
his sister Nancy.
A memorial service in celebration of his life will take place on
Saturday, April 13th, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 30 Prince William
St., St. Stephen, with a reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations in
Jim’s memory to go to Lincourt Manor or to The Anglican Parish of St.
Stephen. On line condolences to the family or donations can be made at
