Obituary for
Francis Lloyd « Frank » Smith
Passed on peacefully at the Elizabeth-Bruyère Centre, on Wednesday, March 6th, 2019 at 94 years after a lengthy struggle with illness. Frank was born in Ottawa on December 7, 1924, the youngest child of Henry and Gertrude (Dingwall) Smith. As a youth, he loved running track and playing the trumpet. Frank enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy serving as an Able Seaman aboard the Kootenay (River Class Destroyer) in the Second World War. He returned to Ottawa to attend Carleton College, where he met his future wife of 44 years, Connie Lee (Barnes). Frank entered into the public service, working as a statistician for Statistics Canada, and built a home and raised a family. He took great pleasure in carpentry and electronics and, later on, in coin collecting and his daily morning crossword. He was a member of the R.A. seniors’ bowling league for many years. Frank treated everyone with a gentle dignity and genuine respect, and his sense of humour always brought smiles to those whose hearts he touched. As a husband, Frank was steadfast and strong during the tough times as well as the good. As a family man, Dad (and, later, ‘Grandad’) always made sure his kids were going to be okay, offering patient kindness and generous support whenever needed, whether asked for or not. Surviving are his children: Elaine, Janet (Peter), Eric, and Eleanor (Agostino), his grandchildren Rachael (Tyson), Zachary, Katie, Erin, Sarah, Nicolas, and Emily; his great-grandchildren Lexi, Laci, and Olivia; and his nieces Joan, Ann, Karen (Tim), and Gillian (Dan). He is predeceased by his wife, Connie Lee (Barnes); his siblings Grace, Orpah, Fred, and Eric; and his granddaughter Christina. The family’s heartfelt gratitude goes out to the Elizabeth-Bruyère Centre, 5th floor staff, the Riverside’s Multi-Care Kidney Clinic, and the many wonderful nurses who cared for him. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) in Ottawa on Sunday, March 10th from 2-4 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday, March 11th at 1 p.m., with a private family interment service to follow. Donations in his memory may be made to Bruyère Foundation or to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
