Allen Barry Irving, 71, of Miramichi, died Thursday, March 21 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital using the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program, following a lengthy and finally futile treatment for metastatic prostate cancer.
Allen was born in Flatlands, N.B., the son of Max and Betty (Ferguson) Irving, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Cadogan; sisters Dorayne (Don) Barter of Coldstream B.C.; Jennifer Cara of Victoria, B.C; Linda (Bobby) Stymiest; Stephanie (Danny) McCormack; and Sharon (Ian Howe) Irving, all of Miramichi; brother Dale (Joanne) Irving of Bathurst; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Allen worked with his father in construction as a bricklayer, and later as a lobster and tuna fisherman, but found his calling as a science teacher at Chatham Junior High and Dr. Losier Middle schools. He has donated his body to science so he can continue teaching.
Allen was a member of the Maritime Champion Loggieville Bisons, named to the provincial and Miramichi sports wall and hall of fame. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, skiing and the elusive game of golf. He loved that old time rock and roll and a good party, and found many opportunities to enjoy both.
Allen and his family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who have cared for him over the years, most especially his family doctor and friend Dr. Bill MacGillivray; the caring and compassionate teams with the local oncology unit, the extramural program, and the doctors and nurses with MAID, who allowed him to steer his own ship to the end.
Allen would also like to thank his wife for her support and advocacy on his behalf.
A memorial reception in Allen’s honour will be held at the FP Loggie Memorial Hall at 4410 Water Street, next to Knox United Church in Loggieville, on Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Allen B Irving 2019..
