It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our super hero
son, Zackary Terry Douglas Shaw. AKA: Zack, Leroy, Sally, Zacky Boy,
Zackariah, Little Zack, Baby Brother, and Charlotte County Hero.
Surrounded by his loving, supportive and amazing family, Zackary
passed peacefully at the IWK in Halifax on the night of February 9,
2019. Zackary is survived by his loving parents; Courtney Shaw (Tyler
MacInnis)of Back Bay and Jaret Wentworth of Pennfield. His four
sisters; Jessica Colford (Zack Finley) of Grand Bay-Westfield, Kayla
Connors (Ryan Connors) of Saint John, Jennika Shaw (Daniel Cunningham)
of Back Bay, Harley Shaw of Back Bay, his step sister Zoey-Moon
McCormack of Saint John and his new nephew Weston Finley whom he
unfortunately never got a chance to meet. His maternal grandparents;
Terry and Eileen Shaw « Bampa and Mammie » of Back Bay. His
paternal grandparents; Deloris (Douglas) Lockhart of Blacks Harbour,
Douglas (Dot) Wentworth of Fredericton, his great grandfather
« Big Papa » Redmond Leavitt of St. George and his chosen
grandmother Mae Hanley of Back Bay. His « Aunt B » Charity
Shaw (Brandon Rogers) of Back Bay, Uncle Douglas « Troy »
(Sonia) Wentworth of Ontario and his Aunt Angela (Luc) Roy of Saint
John.
Zack was predeceased by his Nanny Shaw (June Shaw) and his chosen Papa
(Royce Hanley) both of Back Bay.
Other than being our hero, Zack was a shy boy who didn’t like
attention and liked his privacy very much. He was kind, loving,
generous and empathetic. He had a great sense of humour and a quick
wit. Anyone who met him instantly loved him. He made friends easily
and respected everyone no matter their race, culture, beliefs, job or
age. He was an old soul and loved life to the fullest, never
complaining he was the one sick. These words often came out of his
mouth, « I’m glad it’s me sick and not some other child. » Not
too often would you see Zack not wearing his smile even if he had to
fake it. He fought a long, hard 7 year battle of high risk Leukemia
with 2 relapses and 1 bone marrow transplant. He really was the
epitome of strength and showed it right to his very last breathe.
Zacky Boy loved his family very much and loved spending as much time
as he could with them whether it be in person, on the phone or video
chatting. He shared a special connection with each family member and
he made sure they all knew he loved them. And they sure loved him as
well. Zack loved sports, most of all the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto
Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs. He had the privilege of meeting some
members from each team over the last few years. One would usually find
Zack watching the Jays in his Bampa’s lap and talking about the
hunting trips they were going to have together. And screaming for joy
with his dad when the Raptors scored. He loved playing baseball and
basketball and enjoyed spending time on the field with his Aunt B
throwing around the ball and skating.
During treatment in Toronto in 2016 Zack spent time with his Uncle
Troy, Aunt Sonia and cousin Brooke which he enjoyed very much and
loved showing them around the Ronald McDonald house and making
memories. A special thank you to his friends Carrie and Jason Smith
for making our stay easier. When Zack was home, he would usually spend
time with his Mammie online shopping. He loved clothes and shoes. Zack
also loved video games especially his Xbox one, Pokemon cards and
lego. He was really good at mental math and trivia. He enjoyed school
too. He liked watching the Simpsons, Friend’s and Scooby Doo. He
enjoyed gardening and camping with his dad and doing « man »
things together and snuggling with his mom talking about stories of
when he was a little lad and what he wanted to be when he grows up;
« Mommy, can I be a pastor and a rcmp officer at the same
time? » Thank you to Pastor Jr. Cooke for having such an impact on
Zack and to Pat Quinn even though you didn’t know. What Zackary didn’t
realize over the course of his 11 years was that he was already
pastoring. He taught so much to so many people and always accepted the
Lord in his heart despite all that was happening to him.
He loved all of his sisters, especially loved razzing Harley. Jennika
was his best friend and they shared a very strong bond. Jessica and
Kayla, thank you for being such loving sisters. He shared a special
love with his best friendcousin Gracen. And sure loved his little
Zoe Zoe and Addy which he spent many hours video chatting with them
while in hospital.
Zackary will be so missed beyond what words could ever describe. He
was everyone’s hero far and wide.
A huge thank you to Charlotte County for always stepping up when we
needed you! To the countless of healthcare teams at Saint John
Regional Hospital (a big thank you to his favourite nurse, Judy), the
IWK in Halifax and Toronto Sick kids. Zack was always reminded of how
lucky he was to have so many great people fighting right along side of
him. Your acts of kindness and love never went unnoticed.
Because Zack was a private person we have decided not to have any
services. We kindly ask that you make a money donation in his memory
to the Charlotte County Cancer Society, The paediatric floor 4AS room
13 at the Saint John Regional Hospital or 6 LINK at the IWK.
