In loving memory of Viola Maria Nohel (nee Sztaskova)
November 28, 1934 – February 5, 2019
Peacefully at St. Francis Memorial Hospital, Barry’s Bay, Ont. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 in her 84th year. Daughter of the late Dr. Viktor Sztasko and Ibolya Sztaskova (nee Andruch) of Slovakia, with Hungarian heritage. Loving mother of Max (Jill) of Fenelon Falls and grandmother of William & Spencer Guthro of Nova Scotia. Predeceased by her brother Viktor Sztasko of Hungary, her dear sister Katarina Ebel (Arndt) of Germany and brother Alex/Sandor (Gabriella) Sztasko of Rockingham. Loved Aunt to Mathias (Franziska) and Viola (Oliver) of Germany and Alex/Csaba (Tasha) of the valley. Surrogate grandmother to the children of the Baird family. Friend forever of Omkaro. She will be dearly missed by her great network of friends all over the world.
Born in 1934 in Velke Kapusany in the former Czechoslovakia. The family survived bombings of their home and internment of her father during WW II. Viola and her son escaped Czechoslovakia in 1969, following the Soviet invasion of 1968. Canada became their new home of which she was eternally grateful for. Viola and her son Max spent a number of years in Toronto where she worked in the library at York University. They were always drawn to the beautiful nature of this country. Upon her retirement she moved to Wilno and eventually to Killaloe. The Ottawa Valley is where Viola’s life blossomed with the freedom to create and nurture her gardens and many great friendships. Viola was passionate about the arts, literature, music and gardening. Viola was also a prolific letter writer which forded her the ability to reach out and touch many people’s lives around the world and to share her positive outlook on life. Her ‘old-world’ cooking was legendary as she fed many a friend; no one left her home hungry.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be planned in the spring, once her beloved flowers return in her garden. Instead of flowers or donations, Viola has asked that you plant a tree. She will forever live on in our hearts and memories.
