Josef Weirathmueller
1931-2019
Josef Weirathmueller, age 87, passed away on Monday, February
25th, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, New
Brunswick.
Josef, most often known as Joe or Sepp, was born on April
5th, 1931 in the village of Tiefenbach, Austria to the late Hans and
Maria (Wagneder). He was raised on a farm in the picturesque
countryside of Upper Austria, the youngest of eight
siblings.
He studied sawmill technology in Salzburg, an experience that
launched him into a lifelong career in forest industries. A
combination of mechanical skill, creativity, and a strong work ethic
propelled him through a series of positions throughout Europe and
later in North America and around the world. In 1983, after years of
building a network of contacts and an intimate understanding of the
global forest products industry, Joe established a sawmill equipment
manufacturing company in Nackawic, New Brunswick.
On December 18, 1980, he married Jocelyn dos Remedios, whom
he’d met while working in The Philippines. Together they
raised three daughters, Michelle, Stephanie, and Andrea, and one son,
Jakob. Joe placed a lot of importance in the value of family, and in
his faith in the Roman Catholic Church. He attended mass regularly
throughout his life and was a member of the Knights of
Columbus.
He will be fondly remembered by many for his outgoing nature,
his animated storytelling, and his propensity for yodeling
unexpectedly to the delight of others (and the embarrassment of his
children). He loved to laugh and joke and also enjoyed heartfelt
conversations with loved-ones and strangers alike.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his
brothers, Hans, Friedrich, Leopold and sisters, Stefanie, Teresia,
Marianne, Mathilde. He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn, his four
children, Michelle (John), Stephanie (Ian), Andrea (Christian), and
Jakob, his three grandchildren, Frances, Leo, and Alma, his nephew,
Friedrich, as well as a large extended family.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home,
160 York Street, Fredericton on Thursday, February 28th from 7-9pm and
Friday, March 1st from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Mass will
be held at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church, 120 Regent Street,
Fredericton on Saturday, March 2nd at 2pm. Interment will be in the
spring at the Hermitage Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations may be
made to Alzheimer’s Society NB.
