It is with intense sadness
that we announce the passing of Douglas Winston MacLeod on Sunday,
February 17, 2019, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney,
following a long struggle with COPD.
Born July 14, 1939, he was the son of the late John James and
Florence (Hardy) MacLeod.
Doug grew up on Mira Road and was employed for several years
as a tractor trailer operator with Scotia Limestone and later, LeVatte
Construction. From 1976 until retirement, he was employed with the
Department of Transportation, Sydney River. Doug had a genuine
interest in traditional Scottish music and in his early years,
completed his studies in Scottish violin under the direction of the
late Professor James MacDonald. Doug was a longtime member of the Cape
Breton Fiddler’s Association. Those who knew him soon
realized his great passion for cars and trucks, old, new and antique,
especially shiny ones. The restoration of his 1951 Ford pickup was
near completion when failing health prevailed. He always enjoyed
attending the show-n-shine events, especially during
Sydney’s Action Week. Doug was quiet by nature, hardworking
and a true family man. He was dedicated, baptized and confirmed in the
former United Baptist Church, Sydney, where his family
attended.
Doug is survived by his wife of 46 years, Archiena (MacLeod);
daughter and the joy of his life, Cynthia Jane; brother, Alton
(Gerry), Marion Bridge; niece, Laura (Greg), PEI; nephew, Ken (Jody),
Coxheath; and grandnieces, Lila, Allie and Rachael MacLeod, Coxheath.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Eleanor (the late Sam)
MacLeod, Sydney River.
Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his daughter,
Janice Elan at 14 months and his sister-in-law, Norma (MacLeod)
MacAdam at age 26.
To respect his wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral
service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, February
21 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating.
Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Marion
Bridge.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your
choice.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca
He left his tools
and locked the garage. Though short of breath, he didn’t
complain. In sadness we remain, until we meet
again.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Douglas MacLeod 19392019..
