It is with great sorrow the family of Brian David Henderson advise of his passing which occurred at Maple House, Loch Lomond Village, on February 1, 2019. Following a long period of failing health, Brian passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. While loved ones and friends are saddened by our loss, we and so many others to whom Brian was known in the Saint John community and beyond can find solace in recollections of how he touched our lives.
Brian was born in Saint John to the late David and Dorothy (Donald) Henderson on December 9, 1934. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn “Teekie” (Doyle) Henderson, his brother Garth (Dolly) of Palm Springs, California and his brother-in-law Peter Tobias.
Brian is survived by his three children: Stephen (Judy), Russell (Margie) and Susan; four grandchildren: Mitchell Henderson (Missy), Peter Henderson, Lauren Henderson (Eric) and Daniel Slattery; great grandchildren: Adelynn and Mason; and several nieces and nephews. Also left to grieve is his sister Linda Tobias who has been Brian’s angel on this earth.
Brian was well known in the community for his achievements in automotive sales during the 1960’s and 1970’s. In fact, he sold the first Toyota in greater Saint John. However, it was small business he was most proud of, but never boastful. He started over twenty entities with not much more than an idea, some optimism and old-fashioned work ethic. This culminated with his most successful venture; Brian’s Country Cabaret, during the 1990’s.
Away from work Brian was an avid harness racing fan, even dabbling as an owner on occasion. While in the 1870’s it was common knowledge around the track that if you wanted a horse to stand still you tied him to a hitching post, in the 1970’s you got Brian Henderson to place a bet on him. He was also involved in politics, serving as President of the East Saint John Liberal Association in the late 1980’s.
Without question Brian was outgoing and personable. Those who knew him would overwhelmingly agree that he should be remembered for his excessive generosity, optimistic business attitude and wry sense of humor.
The family would like to acknowledge and express their sincere gratitude to the staff and volunteers of Maple House. Their care and compassion throughout Brian’s time at the Villa shall not be forgotten.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) where visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-8pm. A Celebration of Brian’s Life will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 12 noon from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel. A private family interment will take place at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations to the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by Brian’s family.
