Eduard (Ed) Arend Donkersteeg
March 31, 1936-February 5, 2019
Gone to be with his Lord and Saviour, Ed passed away peacefully in the Brockville General Hospital. Born in Lunteren, the Netherlands, on March 31, 1936, as the 7th child of the late Teunis Donkersteeg and the late Evertje Donkersteeg (née Brom). Following his early education, Ed attended Technical School in Barneveld, earning certificates in carpentry and woodworking, as well as completing a course on engines and tractors. He then worked for a contractor and later for a local farmer.
In April 1958, after completing a year and half of compulsory military service, Ed immigrated to Canada via the ship s.s. Groote Beer (Big Bear), seeking to fulfill his dream of owning a farm. Initially he lived on Wolfe Island, in Sydenham, and in Wilton, working on farms, in construction, and for a cheese factory. He later was employed as a cabinet maker by the MacLachlan Lumber Company in Kingston, where he was recognized for his skill. During this time, he met Hendrika Rietveld and they married in Brockville on June 8, 1963. Together, they bought a farm in Ventnor, farming for 35 years, dairy farming in the early years and later as egg producers. After retirement, Ed enjoyed many years operating a sawmill, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, as well as building three houses.
Beloved husband to the late Hendrika Donkersteeg (née Rietveld). Loving Papa to Joanne (Edward) Hosmar, Eveline (Clarence) DeSchiffart, and Edward (Angela) Donkersteeg. Opa to Michael Hosmar, Rachel Donkersteeg, and Courtney Donkersteeg. Brother to the late Metje (the late Jannis) Groeneveld, Gerritje (the late Gerrit) Druijff, Gerrit-Dina (the late Jan Willem) Blankestijn, Breunisje (the late Willem) van de Pol, the late Jannigje Anna, the late Breunis (Lambertha), the late Jacoba (Roelof) van Reenen, the late Roelof (Maasje), and the late Gijsbert (Geertruida). Oom and Uncle to nieces and nephews in the Netherlands and Canada.
Ed will be remembered for his deep personal Christian faith, his quiet generosity, his wisdom, and his steadfast commitment to his family, friends, church, and community. Friends may call at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Ontario, from 7-9 pm on Friday, February 15. Funeral service will be held at the Riverview Presbyterian Church, Iroquois, Ontario, followed by a reception at the church on Saturday, February 16, at 11 am. Special thanks for the exceptional care of Dr. Jason Franklin and Dr. Rebecca Irvine, Bayshore Healthcare nurses Lindsey DeJong-Carew and Dustin Cullen, the Cancer Centre team at Kingston General Hospital, and the Palliative Care team at Brockville General Hospital. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Riverview Gracefield Campership Fund (through the Riverview Presbyterian Church, Iroquois, Ontario), or the South Grenville Food Bank, Prescott, Ontario, or a charity of your choice.
