Obituary for
Roderick Michael Doney
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather (a.k.a. Grandpa or Grumps), and great-grandfather, Roderick Michael Doney, who passed away peacefully on January 29, 2019 after a heartbreaking battle with Parkinsons and dementia. He was 85 years old.
Much loved husband of Mary (nee Searle), loving father of Karen (Brian Davies) and Lisa (Rod Bruneau). Predeceased by his son Steven Mark Novak. He will be missed tremendously by his grandchildren Justin Davies, Cameron and Sarah Bruneau, Aimee, Loren, Daymond, Kimberleigh, and Dylan Novak and his many great-grandchildren. He will also be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews in Ottawa, his cousins in England and Wales and his brother-in-law Gerry Armstrong (late Becky Searle-Armstrong).
Originally from Burton-on-Trent, East Staffordshire, England, Rod graduated from Burton Technical College in Journalism and worked on newspapers before immigrating to Canada in 1957. His first job in Canada was with Macleans magazine in Toronto and from there he moved to CFCF Radio and Television in Montreal eventually settling at Bell Canada in Public Relations where he was fondly known as “King Rod”. Rod was an avid sailor and loved sailing Lake Champlain in one of his sailboats – Karisma or Chimera – although would rather forget being rescued by the coastguard and having to abandon his beloved vessel on a sandbar in the middle of a raging storm. Thankfully, it was still there the next day. In more recent years he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and taking them to the park or playing games with them when they were younger.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and caregivers at the Bearbrook Retirement Residence for their care and support over the last couple of years.
Friends are invited to visit at St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road (at Aviation Parkway), Ottawa, on Friday, February 1st, from 5 to 8 pm and on Saturday, February 2nd, from 12 pm until time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 1 pm. Reception to follow on site.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada.
