Mary Louise “Nancy “Cuthbert (Nee Rivers)
September 5, 1935 – January 3, 2019
Our dear sister and aunt passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 3rd, 2019. She is predeceased by her husband George Crockatt Cuthbert, parents Mary “May” and Lewis Rivers, and brothers, Jim Rivers (Doris), John “Mike” Rivers (Jeannette), and David Rivers. She is survived by her sister Ann Routley (Bruce), sister in law, Shirley Rivers, and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Nancy lived a very interesting life. She began her career in retail at Tulley’s Hardware and then went to work at the T. Eaton Company in the head cashier’s office. While on holidays in Northern Ireland in 1975, she met George. She returned for a second visit in 1976 and came home engaged. It was a surprise to her family and friends in Winnipeg when at age 41 she married and moved to Belfast.
She and George had a wonderful life in Belfast. They had many friends and family which Nancy kept in touch with until her last stay in hospital. She often shared stories and memories about her life overseas, and spoke about how much she missed it. She spoke often of her visit to Buckingham Palace with George’s regiment in honour of their service at Dunkirk and treasured her photo of her and George at the garden party.
Upon, her return to Canada, two years after George’s death in 1997, Nancy made a new life in Winnipeg connecting once more with her dear lifelong friends and making many new friends, all of which she held close in her heart.
While in Ireland she began painting and became an artist. Nancy was a talented baker, we all loved her chocolate brownies, and knitter. Her prayer shawls have given comfort to many people over the years.
“I want to thank Dr. MacMillian, Dr. Lipschitz, Jan at Rexall Drugs, and my dear friends Valerie Wilson and Rose Popowich. Cheerio, until we meet again.”
Interment will take place, with a graveside ceremony, on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Historic Kildonan Church and Cemetery, 2372 Main Street, West Kildonan.
Donations may be made to Kildonan Community Church -The Cemetery Fund.
