Death Notice
COLEMAN (COLLYER), Jane, nee Guest – Peacefully at home on Jan. 17 2019, after a life of 85 years well-lived. Jane was an extraordinary woman, an extrovert’s extrovert, a trailblazer in the world of women’s progression into leadership, and a kind soul who loved people in general.
Jane grew up in Windsor Ontario, was a graduate of UWO (Honours B.A. 1954), and obtained her teaching certificate in 1955.
Jane’s proudest moments were in talking about her grandsons David and Michael (Steph), and about her children, Nancy (John), Richard (Kelly), and Bob (Martha- Kevin Bowman). She was predeceased by her son Bob, first husband Dr. Robert Collyer, second husband Don Coleman, and parents Dorothy and Dr. Freeman Guest. Jane was also proud of all her relatives, be they Collyers, Colemans, Guests, Thomas’, Murrays, or Cherreys, and she left her positive mark on all of them. In recent years Jane had some health challenges, and she was truly blessed to have had the love and support of her caregiver Jan Pearson.
Jane was an active volunteer in her community. She served on various boards, including Parkwood Hospital, Merrymount Children’s Home, the United Way and May Court. She was a long-time member of the congregation at St. John the Evangelist church, where she took on many roles over the years, including as warden, in the choir and on the altar guild.
Jane’s happiest moments were at her summer cottage in Baysville, Muskoka, sitting on the dock with a gin and tonic, surrounded by family and friends. There was never a phone call she didn’t race to answer, one’s English could never be too perfect, and a pair of stylish shoes never failed to catch her eye. Ever the schoolteacher, the Encyclopedia Britannica was a treasured compendium of the world’s knowledge to be shared over the dining room table as we all grew up. With her passing, the sun may have set, but the glow remains.
A visitation will take place at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 280 St. James Street, London on January 31, 2019 at noon, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Reception following the service, in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Church of St. John the Evangelist,(designated for the endowment for music), or a charity of your choice would reflect Jane’s values and be appreciated by her family.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Jane Coleman Collyer 2019..
