It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Irene Martin. Irene was born in Trail, and passed away peacefully December 31, 2018 at KBRH with family by her side. Irene was predeceased by her parents and siblings, as well as her husband “Spud” and eldest son David.
Irene will be sadly missed by her daughter Arlene (Dave), sons Allan (Melissa) and Terry (Patti), and daughter-in-law Myrna. Affectionately known as “Gmart” she will be missed by her 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Also missing her are sisters-in-law Bev and Minnie, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Irene spent her childhood in Warfield, and was the youngest member of the Trail Tumblers Gymnastic Club. She and Spud raised their family in Rossland where they were both active volunteers and members of many organizations. Irene was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Rossland and Trail Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and Rossland Lions. She served multiple times as Commodore at the Arrow Yacht club, and was one of the founding members of the Golden City Clowns. One of Irene’s proudest accomplishments was receiving the “Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service” recognizing her many years with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Irene also volunteered at Columbia View Lodge and Meals on Wheels. In her later years, Irene kept Publishers Clearing House in business through purchase of every gadget you could imagine.
Irene was well known for helping to feed the Rossland firefighters “Columbia Avenue Coffee” and sandwiches in their time of need. Also famous for her homemade meat pies, Irene always made sure everyone was fed. “Gmart” loved her visits with her grandkids, serving overboiled hotdogs and world class grilled cheese sandwiches.
There will be no service at Irene’s request. There will be a family gathering at the Columbia River Cemetery at a later date. Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Irene’s memory may be made to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation (3rd Floor Medical) at 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC, V1R 4M1 or online at www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca or to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #11 Ladies Auxiliary at 2141 Columbia Avenue, Trail, BC, V1R 1K8.
You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Irene Martin December 31st 2018..
