David Young 2019

Henry David Young
Little Bras d’Or
It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather, Henry David Young, on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in the comfort of his home in Little Bras d’Or, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Bras d’Or on June 13, 1934, David was the son of the late Lawrence and Elizabeth (Farrow) Young, and was the last of 14 children to pass.
As a young man, David spent three years overseas in the military, before being honourably released. He then returned to Cape Breton and shortly after met the love of his life, Elsie. Dad was employed with Devco for 39 years. He worked at the Franklin, Princess and Prince mines throughout his years as a miner. He was an avid union man, and was a member of the safety committee for years. He loved to argue with management and joke with his co-workers. He had a great sense of humour and a beautiful smile. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish in Little Bras d’Or, where he attended Mass faithfully, until he was unable.
Dad loved life. His favourite spot on this island was the Murray River, where he enjoyed many wonderful days fishing with Wayne and Brent. He also loved hunting in the Highlands with his sons and claimed he taught them all they knew! When his children were young, every summer was spent with his family in Margaree or PEI on summer vacations, and we are left with many treasured memories. Card games were another great love of Dads. He loved a game of crib. In his younger years his family home was the gathering place for card games with his Mom and siblings playing Auction on Sunday evenings. In later years, Rummoli or Poker with his wife, children and grandchildren at his home. The rule book was always close at hand so he wouldn’t lose an argument. Lots of laughs and memories. Dad was a great cook and excellent at boiled dinners, and we enjoyed many throughout the years. Mom and Dad spent many summer evenings in the back yard with a fire burning, the Oldies playing on the radio, and a shot of rum!! Moving forward, there is much in life that will remind us of him.
David is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Elsie (Daley) Young; his children, Doreen (Mike), Wayne (Wendy), Brent (Brenda), and the youngest, Laura Lee. Also left to mourn are his grandchildren; Greg, Nicole, Kelsey, Tyler, Jenna, Daniel, Ryan and Deanna, and five great-grandchildren; Hayleigh, Riley, Carter, Zack and Steven.
Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his brothers James, Leo, Louis, Russell, Billy, Alex and Artie, and sisters Tena, Kathleen, Ethel, Mildred, Marguerite, and Madonna, cherished grandson Jason, and son-in-law Earl Hawkins.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dad’s life will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to the SPCA, Sydney, as Dad so enjoyed the four-legged family members that were a part of his life throughout the years; Tiny Bo, Holly, Coco, Cooper, Penny and Chloe, or a charity of choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
Special thanks to Dad’s granddaughter Jenna (RN) for her tender care of her Poppy!! Our family would like to thank Palliative Care, VON, Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise for their compassionate care and guidance during Dad’s final days.
Love you Dad!
