Charles Peter McManus, age 77, L’Ardoise, Cape Breton succumbed December 13 to cancer after a long and courageous battle.
Charles is survived by his wife Lorraine of 57 years, son Mike McManus (Bernadine), daughters Crystal and Leanne (Troy Conrad), grandsons Justin, Keenan and Jacob, brothers Brian (Toronto) and Jerry (Ottawa), many in-laws and of course, his yard sale partner, Tina MacDonald.
Charles served on all three of Canada’s Oberons. He was a proud submariner who travelled the world. He worked with the 824 Silver Dart Cadets for 25 years and enjoyed every moment. He had a loud bark but a big heart. He was an active member of the L’Ardoise Legion, Branch 110 and an avid community volunteer, always willing to lend a hand.
He loved spending winters in Costa Rica wearing his bold tropical shirts. He enjoyed football, volksmarching, yard sales, a good book, tinkering in his garage and of course spending time with his grandchildren. If you lived in Spryfield in the 70’s or Ottawa in the ‘80’s you probably saw Charlie and Lorraine, on their purple bicycle built for two, making their way downtown. More recently, Charlie loved going out to pick up the mail and catch up on local news.
A loving husband, father and grandfather… our papa will be sadly missed.
The service will be Monday December 17, 11am. Holy Guardian Angel Church, L’Ardoise, Richmond County. A reception/celebration of life will be held at the community center afterwards.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the L’Ardoise volunteer fire department, NS Cancer Society or the Richmond Strait Hospital. A big thanks to the nurses and doctors at the Richmond Strait Hospital and the ER and Palliative staff at the CBRH.
