M. B. « Bud » Purcell
December 2, 1938 – January 19, 2019
Melvin (Bud) Purcell- With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Buddy, age 80, on January 19, 2019 surrounded by his daughter, son-in-law, sister and brother, at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Halifax, he was the eldest son of the late Len and Marg (Lilly) Purcell. Dad started his career as a teenager at Stairs Son and Morrow. He finished his career working for his friend, Roger LaPierre, at Spartan Agencies. Sports were a big part of Dad’s life. He was a goalie for the Halifax Wolverines Hockey team in the late 1950’s. He played old timer hockey in his true competitive nature until his heart ended his playing days. He played baseball as a youth and fastball as an adult, playing on the first NS Canada Games fastball team in 1969. He also enjoyed harness racing and owned numerous horses that raced out of Sackville Downs and Truro Raceway. He loved trotters and had success with Town Strutter and March Gallon in Atlantic Sires Stakes throughout the Maritimes. He is survived by his only daughter, Cheryl Purcell-Cotnam (Barry Cotnam) and his beloved grandson, Michael Cotnam, of Halifax. Michael shared Dad’s interest in sports and was a source of tremendous pride and enjoyment for Dad. He is also survived by his sister, Marsha (Doug Given) of Lr. Sackville, his brother Scott Purcell (Pat) of Charlotte, North Carolina, his brothers-in-law Frank Sullivan (Isabel) and John Scott (Maria), his sisters-in-law Lorraine (Russell Hurshman), Mary (Phil Pothier), Pam Scott (Brian), all of Halifax, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Purcell, his parents-in-law Marjorie and John Scott and Aunt Florrie and Uncle Budd Ward who lived with Mom and Dad for many years. We wish to extend a special thank you to Dr. David Tilley who supported Dad and the family for many years but especially these past several years since Dad became very ill. Also, a thank you to Dad’s friend, Jean, for her help and support. Visitation will be Tues. January 22, 2-4 and 7-9 pm at J.A. Snow’s Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mother Teresa of Kolkata Church (formerly St. Stephen’s) on Normandy Dr. on Wednesday, January 23 at 11:00 am. Family flowers only please. Donations in Dad’s memory can be made to Kid’s Sport Nova Scotia, 5516 Spring Garden Road, 4th Floor, Halifax, NS, B3J 1G6, so all children have an opportunity to play.
