Wilma Currie
1934-2018
Wilma Currie loved to dress up. She wore bright colours with
costume jewelry to match for every event, whether it was going to
bowling, bingo or for a drive into town. This amazing knitter, maker
of jams, pickles and amazing deserts, passed away peacefully on
Saturday, June 9, 2018 at St. Joseph’s
Hospital.
Born in Chatham, NB on May 7, 1934, she was a daughter of the
late William and Mary (Sterling) Snare. She was pre-deceased
by her sisters Anne, Bertha and Mary and by her infant brother Robert.
She is survived by her brother William, many beloved nieces and
nephews and a few remaining dear friends. Wilma out-lived two
husbands, Ronald Currie and then Gerard Ellsworth.
Wilma’s children will miss her unwavering pride in
them. They were also very proud of her for working so hard as a
waitress while bringing them up in Rockwood Court. She loved to brag
about all of us: Judi (Stephen), Cathy (Daryl), David (Teri), Heather,
James (Patti), John (Odette), Krista (Terry) and Rorri
(Krista).
On retirement, Mom found her inner country and moved to the
family cottage AKA The Camp to live year round for over 20 happy years
with Gerry. She did her exercises and re-decorated regularly. Together
they gardened , made bread and many new friends, while staying in
touch with her kids spread out over Canada. On every visit , we loved
walking through the door to their loving happy welcome. We
know the The Camp will never feel the same again. Her over 30
grandchildren and great grandchildren will all miss having tea
parties, baths in the sink, and finger nail painting with Grammy
Wilma.
Like all of us, Wilma was a complex woman. Her middle name
could have been ‘sarcasm’ and her opinions did not
always follow the rules, but she was honest, hard-working and would do
anything to help her children. She will be a hard act to
follow.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of
Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint
John, NB (634-7424). A time of remembrance and
refreshment will be observed on Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm
in Brenan’s Reception Centre. A private graveside service
will be held at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery at a later date. For
those who wish, remembrances may be made to Bobby’s Hospice
or a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may
