Life Story for
William John « Jack » Harmer
Harmer, William John (Jack) (July 20, 1937 – July 26, 2018) slipped gently into the waiting arms of his Lord July 26. Cherished husband of 46 years and forever best buddy of Sally (White), proud Dad of Brian (Michelle) and doting Grandpa of Ahmed. Brother of Bob (Elizabeth) and Lee (Robin), brother-in-law of David White (Gail) and uncle of several nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Toronto, spending every summer at his second home in Balm Beach on Lake Huron, Jack shared his glorious singing voice in high school musicals and as a member of Hart House Glee Club at University of Toronto, where he earned his engineering degree. He spent his career with IBM Canada in Toronto, Nigeria (where he was proud to note he was the national squash champion), Ottawa and Montreal.
He retired to his dream location of Niagara-on-the-Lake 20 years ago, the perfect place to pursue his many passions of fine dining, first class wines, duplicate bridge and exceptional theatre. He was a member of the Shaw Guild for 20 years, where he and Sally organized the Shaw Show of the Arts for several years, two Niagara-on-the-Lake duplicate bridge associations, and the International Wine and Food Society. As much as he loved NOTL, he was always happily planning trips to experience what the rest of this amazing world offered. Even penguins in the Falkland Islands were mesmerized by this gentle man with his warm smile.
The family is deeply grateful to the Doctors and nurses at St. Catharines and Hamilton General Hospitals for their compassionate care and support.
Funeral services are being held at 11:00 Tuesday, July 31, at St. Vincent de Paul Church, preceded by visitation in the church from 10:00 to 11:00. Interment will follow at Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Ontario Division, would be greatly appreciated.
