OBITUARY
William Clarence Coolen
August 21, 1920 – November 13, 2018
COOLEN, William Clarence (Clary), 98, of Halifax (formerly Prospect, HRM) passed away on November 13, 2018 at the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Hospital, Halifax. He was born at Halifax, NS August 21, 1920, the eldest child of the late Walter Burton and Mary Johnson (Dodson) Coolen. His early education was at College St. School, St. Patrick’s Boys High School and St. Mary’s College. He joined the Canadian Active Service Force in September of 1939 and served throughout Canada and the United Kingdom until 1945 when he retired as a Captain. His education having been interrupted by his Army enlistment, he resumed his studies and qualified as a Provincial Land Surveyor and became a Charter Member of the Nova Scotia Land Surveyors Association. At the age of 55 he returned to university under the Canadian Institute of Management and St. Mary’s University Continuing Education and obtained his Certificate in Management (CIM). Clary worked in a survey and project management capacity for a number of government departments and private contracting firms. He retired in 1985 from the Department of Public Works of Canada as a Project Manager. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion Association.
Clary was predeceased by his first wife of 61 years Frances Maisie Lutz; sister Mary Magdalene in infancy; brothers Walter Burton Jr. (Joan), Donald James (Eileen), Richard Maurice (May); sister Hilda Valentine (Earl) Jackson and brother-in-law Earl Melville Jackson. He is survived by his second wife Anna Frances; brother John Andrew (Donna); daughters Lianne Marie (Terrence) Joyce and Marcia Christanne (Brian) Hobin; son Peter Bruce (Carolynn) Coolen; grandchildren Robert Coolen, Michael Coolen, Lisa (Corey) Prudhomme, Sean Hobin, Christopher (Reba Keating) Hobin; grat grandchildren Morgan Keating, Ausitn and Evan DrewCoolen, Scarlet, Sawyer, Max and Jessie Prudhomme and many nieces and nephews.
Clary was recognized as a well known Prospect gardener and could still be seen puttering about in flower beds at the age of 90 years. Celebration of Life Visitation Wednesday November 21, 2018 from 6 – 9 at JA Snow Funeral Home, Halifax.
