The family of William Brewer (Sn’əkstíyaɂ) regretfully announces his passing on May 19, 2018 at the age of 93. William will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Margaret (Peggy) Brewer (nee Green), and his children Lyle Brewer (Clarice), Karen Hutchinson (Sid), Barry Brewer (Jan), Valerie Genaille (Frank) and Jenelle Brewer. He will also be missed by his thirteen grandchildren, Laura, Holly, Lindsey, Brittany, Nichole, Dan, Connor, Megan, Colin, Lane, Evan, Draigan and Chris and seven great grandchildren, Kenleigh, SJ, Jacob, Tucker, Shia, Gus and Marshall. He is also survived by sisters Mary Anderson, Charlotte Brewer, Linda Williams, Joanne Brewer and Betty Peitzsche and numerous nieces and nephews.
William was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen (Kathi) Brewer, his parents Ernest and Emily Brewer, his stepmother, Helen Brewer, his siblings August Brewer, 2 infants, both named Billy Brewer, Hannah Marchand, Gordon Brewer, Percy Brewer I, Lloyd Brewer, Percy Brewer II, Janie Marchand, Geraldine Schroeder and Riley Brewer.
William’s working life began in childhood as the caretaker of his father’s horse logging team. He graduated to working in his father’s logging camps as a teenager. His logging career continued as a log loader operator with the logging arm of Hoover’s Sawmill until he was burned when his machine caught fire. He went from the bush to working at Hoover’s Sawmill on Westside Road. He always ran a small beef cattle ranch and loved his time riding the range. He was an active member of the community, serving many terms on the Okanagan Band Council and as a member of the Head of the Lake Rodeo Club. He had fond memories of his baseball days with the Head of the Lake Bluebirds who were the 1953 BC Indian Baseball Champions. He also spent many years on the local rodeo circuit riding saddle broncs in his younger years and later as a calf roper. He had a lifelong love for horses and two stepping to country music, which he listened to until his last moments. Nsyilxcen was his first language and he always welcomed the opportunity to converse with other Nsyilxcen speakers.
Visitors are welcome at the family home at 12424 Westside Road, Vernon, BC. William will be returning home for a final time on Wednesday May 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The Funeral service and burial will be held at St. Benedict’s Church at Head of the Lake Road, Vernon BC, at 11:00 AM on Thursday May 24, 2018. A luncheon will follow at the Head of the Lake Hall next to the Church.
