William « Bill » Heighton
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Matthew Heighton, 68, of Mineville, on August 13, 2018. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Eva-Belle Gosby and Gerald Heighton. Bill was quite the character! Those who knew him can immediately picture him in his Ranger boat, zooming towards the best looking fishing hole of the day. He had a talent for building things, and always turned his projects into something to be proud of. He was masterfully skilled at playing the guitar, and relished time spent strumming and singing along with friends and family. He could grill a mean steak. He never hesitated to have lofty goals, and was instrumental in bringing the first B.A.S.S. Chapter to the Maritimes. He will be remembered for his compassion, honesty, kindness, fun and quirky sense of humour, and willingness to help others. Friendships were cherished, and every person he ever met was touched by his generosity. In his professional life, Bill owned and operated his own business, Independent Auto Appraisal, for 30 years. Left to miss him are his partner of 5 years, Glenda Sleigh; daughters Lesa (Paul Martell) Oakley, L’Ardoise; Angela (Craig) Stiles, Georgetown, Ontario; and Crystal Heighton, Coldbrook. “Grampie” will be sadly missed by his biggest fan, his grandson Matthew Heighton. He is also survived by his many loving brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews; and his right-hand person in the running of his business, Lill (Wayne) Seaward. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Diane Heighton; and the woman who lovingly raised him, Mrs. Carnell. His remains have been cremated. Visitation will be held at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, on August 17, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on August 18, at 11 a.m. Private burial will be held at a later date. Special thanks to the staff of the 3 West unit of the Dartmouth General Hospital, and the many others who formed his team of caregivers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Terry Fox Foundation.
