Obituary for
Wilhelmina « Wilma » Mirer
Wilma was a quiet pillar of love and strength. She taught those around her to be patient, kind, generous and nonjudgmental. She loved croquettes, chocolate hail sandwiches and fish & chips – food was a part of life that brought her a lot of joy. She greeted each morning with an enthusiastic “Eerst een beschuitje en een koppie tee!” – “First a rusk and a cup of tea!” which was a fitting meal on her last day. In her travels with her beloved husband Mickey, she spread her contagious kindness to all that met her, making lifelong friends in both Arizona & Florida. She loved her home and her garden on the escarpment in Grimsby and grew to love her new home in her last year and a half with her daughter Irma in Cambridge. Her family was her world – especially her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Wilma passed away peacefully at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, on Saturday, September 1, 2018, in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of Marius (Mickey) Mirer of 76 years. Loved mother of Marius (Mac) Mirer Jr. (predeceased), Yvonne Jackson (late Jack) and Irma Utter (late John). Cherished grandmother (“Nanny”) of Cindy Fader (predeceased), Robert Fader (Kim), Cristine Fader (Renee), Ryan Utter (Sarah) and Andrea Utter (Jason) and great-grandmother of Robert Fader Jr. (Jessica), Shaun Fader, Brian Fader, Emerson Naumann, Clara Utter, Maeve Naumann and Elliot Utter. Predeceased by her father Maarten Olivier, mother Wilhelmina (Hoogstad) and siblings Josif Olivier (Nellie) and Maartje Huijsmans (Shef). Wilma emigrated from Holland with her family in 1960 and considered Canada her home. She was a well-known member of the Grimsby community and co-owned Sewing Paradise on Main Street. She loved sewing, knitting and crocheting and taught many in the community. She was active in the resistance in Holland during WWII. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital and Grand River Hospital. A Memorial Service will take place at Ebenezer Reformed Church, 621 Highway #8, Stoney Creek, on Monday, September 10, 2018, at 1 p.m. A celebration of Wilma’s life will take place at The Judge and Jester, 17 Main Street East, Grimsby on Monday from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
