Obituary Overview
Wilfred Weiss
Wilfred Weiss of Saint John NB passed away at home on April 30 2018. Wilf, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba March 3, 1926, son of the late Joseph & Mary (Rogoski) Weiss. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (Hatchette) Weiss in 2006.
He grew up on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, in Matlock Beach, Manitoba, where his parents ran the “So Handy” store. He spent his youth working for Uncle Dan Rogoski, driving a truck & delivering ice to the cottagers.
Wilf served in the Army as a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, before joining the RCMP in 1951. Other than a short time in Ottawa, he was stationed throughout NB for much of his career in the RCMP. He met his wife, Pat while stationed in Saint John. They made lifelong friends in every corner of the province as they were transferred to different detachments.
They settled in Moncton, living on the Gorge Rd. for many years after Wilf’s retirement, in 1976, moving to Saint John in later years to be closer to family.
The RCMP family was an important part of Wilf’s life. He enjoyed the monthly luncheons with the Saint John RCMP Vets group & the NB RCMP Vets meetings. He would share stories of the one man detachments where Pat was the “unpaid second man” taking care of the office & manning the radio while he might be miles away for over 24 hours, attending house calls.
He was a member of the Branch #69 of the Royal Canadian Legion and a Life Member of both the Lions Club & the RCMP Veterans Association.
In additions to his parents and wife, Patricia, Wilf was predeceased by his brother, Edward. He is survived by his daughter Paula Weiss, sister in law Anita Weiss, nieces Lynn (Bert) Menear & Beverly (Jerry) Salmon & their children.
