Walter M. Latta
1940-2018
It is with sadness we announce the
peaceful passing of Walter Milton Latta,
age 77, of River Hebert, NS. Walter passed away peacefully,
surrounded by his loving family and friends on Wednesday, April 4,
2018 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
Born in River Hebert, NS, he was a son
of the late Walter and Helen (Dewitt) Latta.
As a young man, Walter moved to Prince
Rupert, BC and began a career on British Columbia’s north coast
working on ocean tugboats. He soon met his lovely wife Hope and they
started a family together. His marine career required him to be away
from his young family for extended periods of time so in 1969 he moved
his family south to North Delta, BC to begin a new chapter
in his life. Walter began working in commercial construction and
eventually started his own successful family business. He retired in
1996 and moved back to River Hebert with Hope. He very much enjoyed
being a hobby sheep farmer and spending time with Hope and their many
wonderful friends. Walter was a devoted and hardworking father and
husband. He was dedicated to coaching and volunteering for his
children as a younger man and later during his retirement years Walter
was very involved with the River Hebert Development Association, local
park, the Hillside Cemetery, and the annual Christmas parade where his
« sheep » reindeer Santa sleigh float was adored by so
many children. Walter was a loving husband, father and
grandfather, known to his grandchildren as
Papa.
He will be dearly missed by his son Neil
(Kelly Jeffcoat), Birch Bay, Washington State; grandchildren Jordan
and Kenley; siblings Margie Pierce, Port Alberni, BC, Diane Latta,
Montreal, PQ; nieces, Janice, Gordie, Susan, Robin, Chris, Aaron,
Belinda and Brenda.
He was predeceased by his wife Hope only
4 months previous, his son Christopher in 1989; siblings David and
Janice Latta; nephew Howard.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church
St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). Visiting hours will take
place at the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, Main Street, River Hebert, on
Monday from 6 to 8 pm. Walter’s funeral service will be held
on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 1 pm from the Furlong~Jones Funeral
Home, River Hebert, NS. Burial will take place in the
Hillside Cemetery, River Hebert, NS at a later date.
Should friends desire, memorial
contributions may be made to the Hillside Cemetery, the Cumberland
Health Care Centre, or the charity of your choice.
