Walter James Chase
1941-2018
Walter James Chase, of 55 Mount Pleasant Avenue North, Saint
John, NB, passed away peacefully October 15th
in the presence of his beloved wife, Irene (nee Sulis) of 56 years;
and his six children: Stephen (Victoria Walker), Jacqueline (John)
Gallagher, Michael (Louise), Peter (Brenda), Katherine (Brent) Mallett
and Andrew (Jeff Warren). Walter was a proud grandfather to
Mackenzie Chase, Kaylie Chase, Brayden Chase, Jonathan Gallagher,
Patrick Gallagher, Lauren Chase, Matthew Chase, Charlotte Chase,
Christine Chase, Anthony Pascon and Robert
Mallett.
Born May 23, 1941, Saint John, NB, to Phyllis Chase (nee Day)
of Ottawa and the late Walter Chase Sr. In addition to his
father, Walter was pre-deceased by his infant son, Daniel; his
brother, James; and sisters: Gwen and Mary.
Graduating from St. Malachy’s High School in 1957,
and later attending the IBM Institute in Montreal, Walter had a
lengthy and rewarding career as a pioneer in IT and a Data Manager
Specialist with Eastern Bakeries Ltd in Saint John.
Walter was well known in recreational sports, coaching many
hockey and baseball teams, and serving on the executive of Simonds
Minor Hockey Association and the Saint John Minor Hockey
Association. He was the co-founder of the Forest Hills
Federation Baseball League and later became instrumental in the
re-establishment of the South End Minor baseball League. His
own personal athletic accomplishments included his high school hockey
team, St Peter’s Senior Ball Team at the age of 15, and an
invitation by the Major League Baseball team, Milwaukee Braves to
attend their training camp – which he passed instead to get
married. After putting down his glove competitively, Walter
was a senior umpire in Saint John’s various baseball
leagues.
Walter’s athletic enjoyment extended to his
dedication and support for all of his children’s and
grandchildren’s sporting pursuits with many hours spent
driving and cheering in the stands.
In addition to sports, Walter’s life was enjoyed in
his love and appreciation for the outdoors, including: hunting and
fishing, leadership in the Scouts of Canada organization, the rich
history of his community, his faith to his church and most truly of
all, his deep love and commitment to family.
Walter leaves many fond memories of life with his family –
most notably: summers at the family camp in Lepreau, the many road
trips for sports, picnics at Rockwood, summer excursions to PEI and
time spent on Blueberry Hill, along with many family gatherings at
Mount Pleasant.
