Obituary for
Vivian Hodder
September 6, 1957 – April 19, 2018
Vivian Hodder (nee Janes), late of Prince Albert, SK, passed away on April 19, 2018 at the Victoria Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with Cancer. Vivian was born on September 6, 1957 in Embree, Newfoundland to Mark and Queenie (nee Fudge) Janes. She was the third born out of eight children – she had 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Although in later years they were separated by distance, she loved all her siblings very much. When Vivian was 16, she underwent extensive surgery on her back when it was realized that she was born with a dual spinal cord. The Doctor told her she was “one in a million”, and she most certainly was. She overcame adversity and proved the doctors wrong – they gave her a handful of years before she would be wheelchair bound – 45 years later she still wasn’t in a wheelchair. Vivian met the love of her life, Ted Hodder when she was still a teenager, and would spend the next 45 years with him by her side. They married on August 1, 1977 in Happy Valley, Goose Bay, Labrador, and would welcome their only child, Todd on March 5, 1978. Ted and Vivian moved out west with the rest of Ted’s family in 1979. They first lived in La Ronge, before settling in Prince Albert. Vivian went to work, bartending, waitressing and baking at several hotels and restaurants in Prince Albert. One of her shining moments was when she baked for the Governor General of Canada, and she later received a letter of appreciation for her delicious baking. Most people will remember her from her time at South Hill Inn, where she waitressed and took excellent care of her regulars and her co-workers. They were her second family. Her proudest moment in recent years was on May 13, 2012 – which was also Mother’s Day, when she finally became a grandma to Reegan. Reegan and “Batman Nan” spent countless hours together over the last 6 years. Nan watched Reegan so her parents could work, and Reegan is very lucky to have Nan watch her instead of going to a day care centre. They spent their time playing games, colouring, baking the delicious bread the Nan could whip out effortlessly. Nan always made sure Reegan had warm blankets and mittens that she would knit. Vivian told everyone she met about the “light of her life” that Reegan was. On August 12, 2017, Vivian finally got to witness her only child wed his long time fiancée Darcie. She served as Todd’s witness on this very special Day. Vivian is survived by her husband: Ted; son: Todd (Darcie Aug); granddaughter: Reegan. She is also survived by her father: Mark Janes; siblings: Gloria Turpel, Larry (Josephine) Janes, Sheila (Joseph) Commanda, Carmen (Michelle) Janes, Jeanen (Rick) Evans, Christine Janes, and Jerry (Debbie) Janes. She is also survived by Ted’s siblings: Lem Clarke, Betty (Garry) Mesher, Melvina (Dave) Norris, Loretta (Kenny) Eaton, and Rick (Kim) Hodder. She also had numerous nieces and nephews. She was also survived by some very close friends that she absolutely treasured, Wendy Klughart, Lorrie Marlow, Nola as well as many others. She also leaves behind two fur-babies, Bella and Ginger. She was predeceased by her mother: Queenie; Parents-in-law: Stanley and Ruth; and sister-in-law: Gaye Clarke. The family would like to thank Dr. Grobler and all of the nurses on Level 5 for the excellent care that Vivian and family received. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 – 3:00 pm at the Salvation Army Church. In lieu of Flowers, Donations can be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation, 1200 – 24th Street West, Prince Albert, SK S6V 5T4, or the Prince Albert Parkland Hospice Palliative Care Association, Box 1711, Prince Albert, SK S6V 5T3.
