Obituary for
Viktoria Schuchardt
On July 22, 2018, our beloved mother, Oma, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at home.
Viktoria is survived by her children, her daughter Agnes and Glen Tamoto, son Hermann and Val Weide, daughter Christa and Bob Richard, and son Ralph; her cherished grandchildren, Christopher, David, Ashley, Nicole, Madeleine and Owen. She is also survived by her brothers, Heinz in Germany and Al (Donna) in Winnipeg, her stepsisters, Edith (Richard) and Erika (Eugene). Also surviving is her childhood friend Hedwig Fink in Germany. She was predeceased by her husband Hermann in 1994, her father Hermann in 1995 and recently by her stepsister Lore (Cornelius).
The defining moment of Oma’s life was the loss of her mother Agnes (née Loepp) in 1941. Following the death of her mother, she assumed the responsibility of taking care of her young brother Heinz. Despite living continents apart, Viktoria and Heinz shared a strong lifelong bond.
Oma emigrated from Germany to Paraguay in 1950. She had received training as a nurse in Germany and continued her career in hospitals in Volendam and Asuncion, Paraguay. She met her husband in early 1957 and married July 20 of that year. Oma and Opa, together with three young children immigrated to Winnipeg in July, 1965. After the birth of their youngest child in 1966, she resumed her career as a maternity nurse at the Grace Hospital, retiring in 1986. In the early years of her retirement, she was a kind and loving caregiver to her grandchildren, a source of great joy and fulfillment.
She was sustained throughout her entire life by her strong faith and was an active member of the St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was dedicated to the Stephen Ministries and active in the ladies group. She especially enjoyed getting together with the Widows Group for an afternoon of fellowship and board games.
Oma was at her happiest spending time with her beloved grandchildren, most notably during the countless number of Scrabble games that were mandatory at every family gathering.
Oma was passionate about knitting, having picked up her first pair of knitting needles at age four. Her beautifully handcrafted pieces were shared with her family, friends, friends of friends, and charities. We will cherish these creations and the memories that go with them.
