Victor Melvin Johnson
Victor Melvin Johnson passed away peacefully in Prince Albert, SK on January 18, 2018, at the age of 92 years. He was a loving husband, father, and friend. Victor had a strong Christian faith and treated others with kindness, compassion, and respect. He was a gentleman, and a gentle man. Victor is survived by: his son, Bob (Shannon) Johnson of Saskatoon, SK; his granddaughter, Erin (Tim) Nyborg of Oxford, UK; his sister-in-law Ingrid Kaldor of Regina, SK; numerous nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Signe Johnson (nee Kaldor); his parents, Henry and Carrie Johnson; his parents-in-law, Ole and Ragna Kaldor; his sister, Blanche Christopherson; and his brothers, James, Harold, and Robert Johnson. Victor was born in 1925 and grew up in the Weldon, SK district. He received the majority of his education in Weldon and then completed high school at LCBI in Outlook, SK. Victor attended Teachers’ College in Saskatoon. His first teaching position was at a country school called Iranistan School, and after that he began his thirty-three-year career in the Prince Albert Public School Division, spending twenty-two years as vice-principal and principal. He pursued further studies while working, graduating in 1965 with his B. Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan. Victor retired in 1984. In 1955, Victor married Signe Kaldor. They were married for 45 years, until Signe’s death in 2000. Victor and Signe enjoyed spending time with family and friends. They loved entertaining and were gracious and generous hosts, as their many guests can attest. They travelled throughout Canada and the U.S. and took a trip to Europe with their son Bob in 1971. In the years following Signe’s passing, Victor continued to travel, even touring the Holy Land when he was in his eighties. Victor’s faith was the foundation of his life. In 1947, he joined the congregation of Messiah Lutheran Church in Prince Albert. Both he and Signe were active in their church. Over the years, Victor served on the Messiah church council and the music committee. He played the organ, sang solos and duets in addition to singing in the senior choir, and directed and accompanied the junior choir. Kinasao Bible Camp at Christopher Lake held a special place in Victor’s heart. The fine arts were a major interest of Victor’s. He was involved in bringing the Junior Concert performances to Prince Albert. As well as sharing his talents in his church and the schools where he taught, Victor sang with the P.A. Men’s Chorus and played for services at seniors’ homes. He was recognized for his volunteer work at Victoria Hospital and seniors’ homes in Prince Albert. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1796 – 15 Ave. E., Prince Albert, with Pastor Íris Kristjánsdóttir officiating. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Victor’s memory may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church, Kinasao Lutheran Bible Camp, Box 327, Christopher Lake, SK, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
