Bannon: Verna
The Good Lord decided to take our precious mother Verna Bannon in her 76th year to a better place on Monday, April 16th, 2018. She would never choose to leave her children, but she knew this game called life was over.
An avid card player, she’s earned a seat at the table of one of the best poker games going called Lou. It was always a competitive game played at her mothers’ house on weekends and it could go on for eternity but there’s a lot of players at the table… Read More »

Google Maps now waiting for their beloved sister including Jean, Dorothy, Walter, Gordon, Kenny, and Ted. We believe Mom got dealt a really good hand and since it’s winner takes all she had to take the seat to claim the prize. As a person who didn’t get dealt an easy hand in life, she was remarkable in turning a hand of spades into diamonds.
Her three children Bill Bannon, Brenda Wade (nee Bannon) and Bonnie Hoy (nee Bannon) (and husband Bill) will sorely miss her as well as her stepson Kevin Paterson (and wife Kathy), her son by another mother Jim Anderson (and wife Marybeth), her grandchildren Brad Hoy (and wife Aya), Beverlee Johnson (nee Hoy and husband Martin), Bianca Hoy, Daniel Wade, Eliott Wade, Stephanie Canavan (and husband Daniel) Lisa Bowman (and partner Chad), Rieley, Shannon and Thera . She outlived two life partners Bill (Bannon) and Brian (Paterson) and one stepchild Elaine who she loved deeply and one son-in-law Tim Wade who was her knight in shining armour as he was her fix-it man. Tim could repair anything and was Mom’s go to guy his entire married life to Brenda. Her mother Audrey Fisher has gone on before her and we know she will be waiting for our mother with open arms. Her remaining siblings are Gerrie Croft (and husband Keith), Donald Fisher (and wife Marlene) and Stanley Fisher (and wife Barb) and sisters-in-law Pat Dean and Elaine Lee. Gerrie was our mothers’ closest confidante. Although they lived hundreds of miles apart they knew each so well that you would have thought they lived next door to one another. Mom was a great listener and her dozens of nieces and nephews confided in her like no other. Their secrets will forever remain safe with her.
Verna left on her terms just as she had lived with a sense of peace and purpose and a strong sense of family.
Verna loved music, home cooking (of which she was an expert), movies, and family get togethers. She hosted some of the most memorable events in our families lives. She loved chocolate mints and chocolate almonds, and head cheese for some God forsaken reason, slot machines, buffet restaurants, reading, good movies, driving trips and shopping trips all of which is not in any particular order. She cherished the time she had with Brian who showed her some lively times as they traveled the world.
Friends and family are welcome to attend the visitation at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill Street North in Waterdown on Saturday, April 21st, 2018 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a Celebration of Life starting at 3 p.m. As she was a colourful person flowers are welcome. For those wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers we would ask that cheques be made payable to Bill Bannon. Our mother was always a people person and there are certain people that she would want to help financially if she had the means. Monies will be distributed to those persons accordingly. There is no person in our family that our mother would trust to execute her wishes more than her only son. We can assure you any donation made will make a meaningful difference in someone’s life but because they are direct donations tax receipts will not be eligible. All donations can be coordinated through the funeral home.
As the last chapter of this book ‘The Remarkable Life of Verna Bannon’ ends, a new novel will begin, and it will be a glorious book full of adventure as her vision lives on through all who loved her.
A special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton for your kindness and incredible support during this most challenging time. You are a blessing to all you care for and we will always be grateful for your kindness and compassion.
