OBITUARY
Valerie H. Chapman
August 20, 1930 – November 14, 2018
CHAPMAN: Val . Valerie Honour Maria Therese Fairbrother Gye Chapman lived an abundant and vibrant life beginning in Kolkatta (then known as Calcutta), India on August 20, 1930 born of Valentine Fairbrother, British Indian Armed Forces and Marjorie Mahar, Head Nurse. Val attended school in the Himalayas at Kurseong at St. Helen’s Convent. After the loss of her Dad in 1946, Val located to England with her Mum. Val and Michael Gye, with their son, Stephen, moved to Victoria in 1954. There, and in Vancouver, with her skillful secretarial proficiency, Val worked at Royal Roads Military College (now Royal Roads University), the Provincial Department of Labour, the Labour Relations Board, and as Executive Secretary to Tom Berger. Known for her fabulous entertaining style and marvelous parties in Victoria, Val’s friends enjoyed the fun and hilarity that were her trademark. This all continued on to West Vancouver and to Kelowna. Val’s friendship circle was exceedingly wide – you know who you are! Her love for her friends was inexhaustible as was her deep attachment to all of her many, varied, and beloved cats. Val was completely devoted to her family. She is loved, cherished, and treasured by her son, Stephen Gye, daughter-in-law Jacquie, and grandsons, William and Lee Gye. Friends who have shared Val’s working relationships, her delight in festivities, who have felt the tremendous sparkle of her charm, and who have brought enormous gaiety and merriment to her life are Dorothy Brown and family, Georgina Bandoian, Joanne Chase, Dave Williams and family, the Nobbs family, Marian Chapman Grimwood and Ted, Jane, and Michael Grimwood and families, Jim and Janice Yarnall, Ralph and Deanna Stinson, Carolyn Wilde, the Gallagher gang, Nancy Morrison, Connie Munro, the Gye family, and many, many more. Our celebration for Val will be in the New Year. We are all so blessed to have been in Mum’s, Grandma’s, and Val’s presence.
