OBITUARY
Trevor BATCHELOR
May 19, 1934 – December 3, 2018
Trevor Derek Batchelor was the youngest son of Florence and Arthur Batchelor. He was born in Downham, Kent and attended the Ravensworth Primary school and Edgbury Secondary School. He had several jobs—typewriter mechanic, electrician’s assistant, stockbroker’s clerk before finally joining the British Royal Navy at 17 and training as a Sick Berth Attendant. Nursing was his career for the rest of his life. During the 10 years he was in the Royal Navy he also obtained his State Registered Nurse qualification. Trevor met his future wife, Olive Lewis Plank, in Sunday School at the age of 14. At the beginning it was just friendship but while he was abroad on HMS Superb, Olive began to miss him. During this two-year trip Trevor went to the Caribbean and North and South America returning in late 1955. After that he undertook further training in Haslar Hospital. Trevor & Olive married in 1958 and they had two sons Neil and Tim. After leaving the Navy Trevor obtained his Queens District Nursing qualification and worked as a district nurse in Watford, Hartfordshire. He not only treated his patients medically—he also helped out with the everyday tasks as well, such as putting shillings in elevated gas meters and bringing in buckets of coal. After four years in district nursing Olive and Trevor had the opportunity to emigrate to Canada. In his career in Canada he worked at the Winnipeg General Hospital in the operating room; as Director of Nursing in Altona, Manitoba, Ambulance Training Officer for the Manitoba Health Commission and finally as a nurse in the Lethbridge Correctional Institute in Alberta for 17 years. Trevor also attained the office of Serving Brother of the Order of St. John and volunteered with the St John Ambulance for several years. Upon retirement the Batchelors moved to Parksville-Qualicum and volunteered for the S.O.S. The Parksville Museum and the Parksville Baptist Church.
Trevor was pre-deceased by his parents, Florence & Arthur and his brothers Leslie and Alan. He is survived by his loving wife, Olive, sons Neil (Shirley) and Tim, his grandchildren, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Nicholas, Jennifer and Marcus and great grandchild Malcolm.
The family would like to express their thanks to Dr McClure, nursing staff, and volunteers at the Trillium Hospice who cared for Trevor so ably and well during the last weeks of his life, and also assisted Olive through a trying time.
