September 19, 1946 — April 5, 2018
Fred passed away peacefully on April 5, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Our hearts are heavy with loss, but also full of love and memories. Dad was many things to many people and we all have special memories to hold and cherish. His loving, kind and compassionate friendly nature will be remembered by many. He is survived by his loving wife Myrna of 44 years, his daughters Heather (Dan, Abbygail, Daniel) and Traci (Dave, Kaitlyn, Julia). His greatest joy was being surrounded by “his girls” and his 4 grandchildren. The twinkle in his eye when he spent time with his grandchildren was only surpassed by sharing stories and bragging about each of them.
Fred was born on September 19, 1946 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. As the middle child of three boys he lived his life to the fullest. Shortly after high school he moved to BC, working in Surrey before moving to Kelowna in the early 1970’s. He married Myrna in 1973 and had two daughters, Heather and Traci. Besides his family, Fred had many passions and activities he enjoyed. He raced stock cars, enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, waterskiing, golfing, and flying. He had a variety of careers from owning a Shell Service station, obtaining his private pilot’s license and teaching flying, managing at Sun-Rype and Sears as well as running his own company. He enjoyed many summers camping at our ‘beachlot’ on Okanagan Lake, telling stories around the campfire, spending time on the boat teaching his daughters and friends to waterski and tube. He loved telling stories always reassuring us it was a “short” story as he continued on with great detail. Often the stories were repeated, the fish got bigger, the stories longer and the tales wilder! He was a die-hard Canuck fan, often getting teased by his youngest granddaughter about the standings. He was fortunate to watch the last game in which the Sedin twins played their final game in Vancouver.
Spending time with friends and family was of the utmost importance to him. He attended every dance recital, Christmas concert, coached the girls baseball teams, enjoyed winter camping with the church group and travelling to Japan with both girls for a school trip. He was always up for an adventure! He made friends wherever he went and we couldn’t go far without him running into someone that he knew!
We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Obedkoff for his kindness, gentle care, family support and especially his conversations with Dad about the Canucks!
Our heartfelt thanks and much gratitude to the caring, gentle and attentive staff at the Central Okanagan Hospice House. No funeral by request and a private family service will be held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in May.
